What brand machine has the deepest throat to it for quilting?
|
Not sure which one has the largest but my Pfaff 2.0 has a large one.
|
Are you wanting to know about a longarm or just a regular sewing machine?
|
Not interested in a longarm. Talking about sewing quilting machine.
|
janome horizon is 11 inches for around $2000 or you can get a juki f600 which is 9 inches for $900 or less - i paid $750 for my f600.

Bernina 820 or 830 has a large area. Not sure if its the largest..
|
Janome 6600 has a 9 inch throat. You should be able to pick one up for 1200 or so

I did the same research last fall and fell in love with the Bernina (I believe it was the 820 but may have been a 830) that had about a 12" throat area. Next was the Janome 7700
(Horizon) with 11". Anything less would have not been worth the investment to me as I had a machine with 8 1/2 inch throat. I couldn't even come close to affording the Bernina machine so went with the Janome. Haven't regretted it one bit. Still getting familiar with the machine as it does much more than I will ever need it to do. I have owned a mid arm quilter and hated it. It wasn't so much the machine but partly as I wanted a machine that I could sew and quilt with but I also had to be able to sit. Standing to quilt is not an option for me. I tried some of the sit to quilt machines but wouldn't have been able to sew on them so opted for the Janome. Hope this helps. It would be so nice if someone would come out with about a 14 inch throat machine that you could use as a home sewing machine and also be able to quilt on it. I wouldn't even care if I lost some of the features that the Janome has. There are many more than I will ever use. Ann in TN |
I've been researching this owuestion because K am in the market as well. Janome's Horizon - this year's version ahs an 11"inch arm - I understand that if you can get to a quilt show - they ar less than $2K there. I plan on going to Knoxville to play and eventually buy. I was goibng to buy locally but the store that does my 'tune-up's' is selling last year's model for over $2K and it has a 9 inche arm - just be careful! - fyi

Some of the Vikings have 9" throats. Sapphire, I think the Topaz, Diamond.
|
I know some of the vintage machines have a big throat, and the subject has been discussed on Vintage Sewing Machine Shop, but I do not remember which was the biggest--you might want to post your question there.....
|
My Pfaff expression 2 has a ten inch throat. I paid $1600. for it. I don't have any idea if that is a good price, but I wanted to buy locally, and there it was. :)
Ten inches has worked well for me. |

The Bernina 820 and 830 have 12" throat and the stitch regulator! They also offer a table that can assist in quilting, and even quilt motion software that is comparable to the best computerized quilting machines! Bernina is clearly the leader in this field. If you don't have a local dealer we'd be happy to ship to you! Store support is an important factor. Unfortunately you are a bit far for us! I hope you find a great Bernina dealer near you to try the 8 series! |
If you are looking to only quilt on it - not piece or do anything else, you can look in to a Bailey Home Quilter. They are suitable for sitting down or on a frame so if you ever decide to get a frame you will be set ;) and they are inexpensive, work horses that are not finicky about thread. There is a yahoo group for them and people that have them adore them. :)
http://www.baileyssewingcenter.com/test.html You can get a classroom model from them that is discounted. They come in 13", 15" and 17" |
Brother PQ1500S has a 9 1/2 inch throat. Straight stitch only machine. It comes with an extension bed and many extras brand new for $750.

My singer 221 has an 11 inch throat. It is vintage and a beast. Oh and only does straight stitch..(I only use it to long arm quilt)It can also stitch something crazy like 5000 spm, not that im ever going to let it go that fast. I love it though. hope you find something that you will enjoy

My Viking Sapphire 830 has 9 1/2 in to the sewing foot edge.
I also bought the cheapest lift table for the bigger machines. Its a Bertha I think by Arrow. Cost 550 dollars and was a bear to put togather. |
