I am going to replace my small Brother, with something a little bigger and more powerful. Would like to stay in the $500 range. Any suggestions?

Check out Janome HD3000. It is an electronic model with everything a quilter needs but not a lot of extra fancy stitches. It is "heavy duty" with 1 amp motor and very quiet. The Brother PR420 is loads of bang for the buck--computerized with more stitches. You also might be able to get a Pfaff Select model (mechanicals) in your price range. Those have the advantage of built-in dual feed. I personally feel those are your best options in new at $500 or less.

Have you thought about going vintage? I just picked up a Singer 301 with lots of feet that is in great condition for $207.00 including shipping on ebay. It's a great machine, straight stitch only, does zig zag with an attachment, and a real workhorse. Perfect for FMQ. Enjoy your search.
