Suggestion please :)
I am thinking about buying a new sewing machine and was wondering what to look for in a machine for my quilting and patch work purpose? I have a Jenome now and would like to pass it on to my daughter.

I have had both Janome and Brother machines. I have an old Janome 4800 that is a work machine. I have had it ten years. I have two Brother machines and love them both. I don't think you can go wrong with either. If possible I would suggest you buy from a dealer. I know you can get them cheaper at Wall Mart and Joan's. The reason is that they are usually made with cheaper parts too. Neither really offer service when something breaks down.

I think the first question you have to ask yourself is what do you want it to do. Do you love the fancy stitches? Do you want a large throat space? Do you want knee lift? Does it need to work on a frame? Make a list of the features that mean the most to you and see if there is a machine that matches them.

I just bought a new Brother 1500s. It is a straight stitch only machine with a 9 inch throat. Throat space was my big requirement because I have a smaller machine that does fancy stitches.

check out juki F600 it has a 9 inch throat, tons of fancy stitches along with a bunch of alphabet fonts, knee lift, needle up/down, threat cutter, comes with all the quilting feet and the extension table.

it costs around $900

There are lots of threads here with the same question. You will get a ton of information if you did a search at the top of the page and see what others have said. I love my Jamone Memory Craft 9000 and Bernina 180E. Good luck!

It is most important to figure out what you use the most and what you do. Just piece or machine quilt? do you want fancy stitches.
Go to dealers and try them out. Ask a lot of questions. You know what is important to you. You might also find features you did not know about that you really like.
