Sewing machine in vehicle??
 

Just wondering if anyone has ever used a sewing machine in a vehicle. Of coarse when vehicle is in park and not moving :)

There are lots of folks on here who use them in RV's if that counts as a vehicle.

Actually there are plug ins now for the cigarette lighter. My daughter has one and plugs in her laptop while someone else is driving. I have a friend that uses it to plug in a hair dryer, so it is possible to get the electricity you need.
I have never tried it. I don't see how I could get the machine in a comfortable position to actually be able to use it effectively.
I save hand sewing for when I am a passenger for a time.

I think you would find that a sewing machine would not run on the amount of electricity that would be available from a car battery on an inverter. A lap top uses much less electricity.

Unless you have a big bank of batteries and a way of recharging them (many RVers do, or they have full hook-ups) even if the car battery worked, you would drain it and not be able to start the car again.

There are lots and lots of RVers who take their sewing machines with them.

I have taken my sewing machine when I was staying at a cottage with some projects to work on.

I would take a sewing machine in an RV, and have done so, but sewing in a car/truck/van sounds like a desperate person who needs to plan their time better? LOL

I bought a machine just to keep in my motorhome. I bought a quilters tote with a 50% coupon from Joanne's. I bought 45 and 60 mm rotary cutters, cutting mat and the most popular size rulers, several pairs of scissors, and just about everything I would need to put together a sewing room...only in small scale. When we go to the racetrack I don't always have time to sew, but when there is rain, that little sewing room is a dream. I actually get more seeing done at the track than I do at home, no laundry, housework, etc to call me away. Like a sewing vacation.

Many truckers take their mahines with them I plugged into the generator when we were detained to load or unload made time go by faster

I sew in my trailer all the time, but I have full hook ups....electricity. Sew all summer long at the lake.

sassey is right. Some of us truckers take our machines with us (smaller machines, not our bigger computerized ones) & take any opportunity there is to sew. I used to carry mine in the truck all the time. I had a dedicated route so I could go to the LQS & take a lesson or just sew with the other quilters that were there. When I had some serious downtime, I would drag everything into the drivers lounge & sew. When I was loading or unloading I would do hand work or maybe do some cutting out of pieces to be sewn. Kept things progressing. We trucking quilters can get pretty creative when it comes to our quilting.

Hello to the trucking quilters! I didn't know truckers quilted on the road, but I think it is great that you have a way to sew in your vehicle, and enjoy quilting in your down time while traveling. I love it!

I take mine in the RV with a sewing supply case I put together for that purpose. I can't imagine trying to sew on a machine in a car. I usually take some hand work - mostly knitting or needlepoint for car trips.

When I bought my used embroidery machine, the gal had it set up in her van. We meet in the parking lot and she showed me how to use it. Not sure what she used to plug it in. Something that was plugged into the cigarette lighter. But it is possible.

LOL very true Cindy. Where there is a will there is a way. I used to hand embroider when I went in to eat (waiting for food) all the waitresses used to call me the bag lady because I kept it all in a bag LOL

I always take one of my machines with me in the RV. I have never used it in a car, though.

Ohhh, this sounds like the best vacation ever!!

If you sewing machine is a computerized one, don't leave it in a hot vehicle as it will ruin the computer part of machine.

I saw a documentary on T.V. about a married couple drive team with a big rig and a fairly good size cab and she had her sewing machine (small) and accessaries with her. She demonstrated how she used it. Very interesting.

Anything is posible i seen a motorcycle going down I-44 in Missouri with feather weight on the back seat and a lady driver.. A big bag was on the very back. Just bet she had everything she needed to sew with in it. She wern't no young chic either.. I aplaud her. Oh by the way she was from New York city. Wonder where she was going..

When I 1st read the beginning of your question I thought who would sew while in riding motion then my mind read the 2nd half. Wow I wish I could sew while in a vehicle. Have fun.

When I went to look at a featherweight for sale we met the seller in a parking lot and we hooked up a portable plug and tried it out in his van. Worked like a charm.I bought it:)

I used to sew while my husband drove in our RV. We had an inverter and i put my machine on the table with some anti slip under it and sewed to my hearts content. Just don't try to iron unless you have a big enough inverter :pask me how i know LOL.

please please please do not carry your machine in your car only in the trunk. it becomes a big flying bullet if in a accident. there is a young girl here who got hit in the head with her dads toolbox. it caused extensive damage. ther was an article in readers digest awhile back with warnings on loose objects in a car.
