shades of gray

I have been collecting fabric of different shades of gray and wanted to know if any of the board members would have an idea on what quilt pattern I could use. There will be a lot of different fabrics but I'm not sure how I would arrange them and have them look good. I would love your help. Thank you...

Are they solids or prints? Could we have a picture?

QuiltnNan 08-13-2014 03:34 AM

i would love to see this in various shades of gray

Yes, a picture would help loads, QuiltnNan, I love that quilt.

Wouldn't all those shades of gray need at least one pop of color somewhere? :)

Check your library for books on neutral or Japanese quilts. They are often taupes & browns, but greys would also look wonderful. I did a google image search for 'neutral quilts' and lots came up.

charlottequilts 08-13-2014 04:15 AM

If you see photos online, can't you change them to grayscale to get an idea? It gives some idea of contrast when fabrics are in color.

I would think you'd need serious differences in value and some attention to tone.

i'll be curious to see what folks come up with, as a lot of us have large amounts of a single color and could use the same ideas. :)

hugs,
Charlotte

I think this one would be pretty in grays. I would substitute the gray in the colored areas maybe use a bold vibrant color in the white areas. http://www.robertkaufman.com/assets/...meadow_pdf.pdf

Labrinth Walk is shown in shades of gray. Also a log cabin would be pretty with a focus color as the center block. There are lots of quilts that would be pretty with shades of gray, but I do think you will need a pop of color. Can't wait to see what you finally decide.

How about the Bargello quilt pattern from anniescatalog.com called Mystique? It could be done with all the shades of gray and an accent color for the center.

http://www.jibberishdesigns.com/wp-c...10-225x300.jpgThis one is called Not so Twin Strips, from Jibberish Designs. A collection of neutrals with a few splashes of color - would be perfect!

I made my own jelly rolls out of gray -- this is what I did with them. This picture shows it still needs the scrappy border and centers on the flowers. The quilt is actually finished and waiting for me to quilt it.

Here's one that I'm working on. The pattern is Triangle Confusion, found here: http://doublenickelquilts.com/Triang...on-DNQ-117.htm

I used nine shades of gray, from nearly white to very dark, in place of her "lights", and all kinds of other solid colors in place of her "darks".

I've been collecting up grey fabrics with grid line and boxy type patterns for awhile. My intention is to make a quilt full of skyscrapers. Probably will do it applique but not sure yet, depends on what I end up with for a final pattern.

My daughter just asked me to make a soft gray quilt but she wanted simple 10" squares of various prints. I've been doing a lot of Bonnie Hunter stuff lately so this will be different for me! I was also thinking of using the Accuquilt apple core die for this.

The Union Square Quilt using Daiwabo Taupe fabric

check out this youtube video. I think it would look great in grays.

I started collecting grays for a bargello some time ago. Have not yet done anything with them. Looking forward to seeing what you do with them.

I love the way my Block Buster by Kariepatch Designs turned out. If you have greys with a lot of contrast, this might be an option for you.

I have, what I think, is the PERFECT pattern for this.......Blanche Young's "Traditions with a Twist" book has a pattern called Bloomin' 9 Patch.......It alternates 9 patch blocks with solid squares......Colors - from outside to center, are the darkest moving in to lightest in center...For a queen size, you need 10 colors........the 9 patches change as you move toward center....Colors 10 and 9, then 9 and 8, 8 and 7, and so on......so the row The quilt makes up beautifully -= even the the colors chosen in the book to illustrate are a bit garish.......I am doing one now in shades of gray - from dark charcoal to ivory with a light pearl gray print......Good Luck!!

Shades of Gray

If your library has the book Quilts of Thimble Creek, Alex Anderson has a pattern called Simply Beautiful that she used for neutral fabrics. She used all shades of tan and cream and it is so pretty. It would also be very pretty in all shades of gray. Also, if you find the book by Karla Anderson called Stack the Deck,
there is a pattern with hearts appliqued on the blocks. I did this pattern in neutrals and added a few
hearts and it's very pretty. And it's a fun pattern to do. Have fun!

Have you Google GRAY SCALE QUILTS to see if there are any ideas that will inspire you??

I have this book and can just picture the quilt as you described it - it will be gorgeous! I hope you will post pictures of it when you are done!

I've seen a double wedding ring bedrunner in shades of grey. Super elegant. Might look nice in a quilt, too.

IBQUILTIN 08-14-2014 12:14 PM

I have a Pattern from Fons and Porter that was in a magazine. It is called French Farmhouse (actually a double Irish Chain) I am doing it in shades of Purple, but the Gray's would be stunning this way.

wildyard 08-14-2014 02:58 PM

I did a scattered D9P in greens, blacks and grays, but you could probably use just grays if you have enough variety. Seach board photos for Seasonal Greens to see mine.

asabrinao 08-14-2014 06:58 PM

I think a lot of Jacquie Gering's quilts would work beautifully in grays. I'm thinking specifically of this quilt from her blog: http://tallgrassprairiestudio.blogsp...red-remix.html

Good luck!

A big thank you for all your suggestions. I will be checking the websites and library. It will be a while before I get at it but I will post a picture when I'm finished. Once again....Thank you...

I love this quilt. It has such a clean, modern look.
Would you share the pattern name with us?

Jeanne S 08-15-2014 05:25 AM

barb,
the pattern is called "whispered lace" and is in a book called Modern Neutrals by Amy Ellis. It is my favorite quilt book and has many great patterns. I have made several of them.

Thanks for the info. I may just have to buy that book. I like several of the patterns.

Beautiful quilt. I like that pattern, I particularly like "on point" settings.

I am totally out of the loop as far as technology is concerned. I tried to open this link and my page only showed me the features of an iPhone. I had no idea whether I could click one of the links to find the photo you sent.
