Hi,
Can a rotary cutter be sharpened? Bige |
I did send some of my rotary cutter blades out to be sharpened once & they worked fine when I got them back. They just seemed to dull faster the 2nd time around. I don't remember where I sent them - it was from an ad in the back of Quilters Newsletter magazine I believe. Nowadays, I am always in too much of a hurry to wait to get them back! I know there are sharpeners you can buy, but I don't know anyone who has tried them.

ther are many genric blades available. I did a google search and put a link under resources. I have bought various brands, depending on sales and what store I was in. None of them seem to last long. Has anyone tried the generic? I may buy a couple and give them a try.

i sharpen mine. if you Google the words "rotary cutter blade sharpener" you'll find several sources for them. they're expensive, but so are new blades.
June6995 told us about a place that recycles blades and also sells blades for very reasonable prices. http://www.houseofhanson.com/lpsharp.html |
I have had the sharpener for several years. It worked well and certainly was convenient, problem was I couldn't find replace sandpaper discs. The original "one" (disc) didn't last very long. I have thought of trying to cut my own but haven't thus far.
I usually buy my blades at JoAnn's using a 50% coupon. eBay also offers them. Suzanne |
I got my sharpener from Martelli & it will sharpen 28 mm & 45mm blades. So far, I'm pleased with it. As my blades age, I have to sharpen them more often--they don't "hold an edge" as long.

I have a rotary blade sharpener. (Got mine at Joanns with a 40% coupon)
I've had it for years and it still works great. I usually take my cutter apart and sharpen the blade, clean it off and put a dab of oil on it after every few cuttings. You'd be surprised how well it works after you do that and it just makes cutting so much easier. It is a nuisance to take the rotary apart but in the long run it's worth it. DonnaCee |
