Does anyone have dull scissors? At Guild last Mon. night, one of the demonstrations we saw was how to sharpen our own scissors.
Just buy a whet stone--about 2"wide, 4" long, and put an edge on your scissors with a back and forth motion. She said she got hers at Ace Hardware. Don't know if they are a nation-wide company, but maybe a call ahead to a hardware would save a bunch of steps. I plan to pick one up this week. They are a Steel-Gray in color. Mariah. |
never tried to do my own

I have a Smith's Knife and Scissor sharpener. Here's a pic:
http://kennesawcutlery.com/Sharpeners/Smith's/Smiths-Knife-and-Scissor-Sharpener You can get them at Lowe's, Home Depot etc. They really work well. Just a few strokes and you can really tell the difference. I run my scissors thru every time I put them away so they are ready to go the next time I use them. The knife sharpener part is also terrific. I also sharpen my knives after I wash them, just before I put them away. This tool actually just dresses the cutting edge. If your scissors are really dull (and they are good quality) I would have them professionally sharpened, then keep them dressed with the tool. Won't need professional sharpening again. |
great way to ruin your scissors!
they make stones just for scissors, but even then it takes a great skilled hand to do them right. Most well balanced beveled edge scissors need a professional to keep that edge right! I know this from studying scissor sharpening to open a biz! I also learned that not all scissors are made the same and can not be sharpened the same, if you don't know what type of material they are, or the angle of the bevel you can ruin your scissors fast! |
I watched her do several pair, and felt pretty good about it. I went to the website offered in the thread above, and
the knife sharpening my husband has also sharpens scissors. Mariah |
you can get the same results by cutting sandpaper, foil and steel wool...anything that says KNIFE edge like most ginghers can not be sharpened on a stone!
Know your scissors or ask a pro! |
Whet stones are not a brand, it is just what they are. Used to watch my dad sharpen his pocket knife on one. Think my hubby has one in the garage. And I agree that scissors are nothing like sharpening a knife.
|
Send mine out to a professional..cost too much to mess up and the pro is not expensive. I have scissors that are 40 years old.

I have a sharpener, its called a crock stick. I've had it for years, dont know if they even sell them anymore, works great for scissors and knives.

There are certain things that should be left to professionals and scissor sharpening is one....Requires skill.
