Ladies for mothers day I got the new sharpener from Nancy Notions called the tru cutter. I had one of those cheapes yrs ago, and yes they are not worth the money but this one is like a knife sharpener with a actual stone in it. You just slide the cutter thru the slot and walla. Sharpened. I love it. And like a lot of you, I kept a blade in way to long because of the cost. It will be a switch to have a blade that actually cuts lol. Good luck hope this helps.

I'll take a new blade.

I recently got a Rotary Blade Sharpener from the Grace Co. I've only used it a couple of times but it seems to prolong the life of the blade.

I recently attended a Nancy's notions sewing weekend. The Olfa rep gave me this hint that worked well - I think. When your blade skips, it's not always the blade; it may be fibers caught in the cuts on your rotary mat. The best way to remove this is to use an art gum eraser and clean the mat. Because my blade was old I did both and cutting is a breeze now.

I've sent old blades in to L.P.Sharp, [email protected] and gotten very good blades back in return. It's been a while I don't know if they're still in business.

I would also say that a sharpener is a waste of money especially when there are nicks in the blade, but just dull from cutting paper might be different. For that alone it might be worth it, but otherwise definitely not. Blades are expensive, but I try really hard to always cover my blade back up right after each cutting, because if it falls on the open blade you have a nick in it.

I find that the cheapest way to get blades is to wait till JoAnn or Hancocks has some fifty percent off coupons or till the blades are on sale for fifty percent off. I haven't found any online that beat that price.

I tried a friend's shapener and it was a waste of time. I buy the Fiskars Razor edge blades, they have them in the larger and smaller sizes and last longer than the other blades. They are worth the extra dollar.

I got an off brand blade sharpener from Joanns and it has saved lots of time and money. I change my old blades out then when I am ready to start a new project I sit down and take a few minutes to sharpen my blades. They are just like new again. Saved me lots of time and money because I live in a rural, isolated area and the nearest Joanns is over fifty miles away and the walmart here stopped carrying any fabric or notions.

OK...Found the sharpener in the kids toy box LOL

It is called the Dual Rotary Blade Sharpener by Dritz

LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

I checked out the site on lpsharp and in my opinion those prices are high. Plus you have to pay for postage to mail in my old ones???
No thanks

Are you saying I'm kidding about the prices being too high? Or do you think the prices are too high too? Or do you think the price is reasonable?

I'm not kidding about thinking they're priced too high. I just purchased five 60mm New Olfa blades from ebay for $10.00 and that includes shipping. *$2.00 a blade for New 60mm*.
Other prices I've seen on completed sales (adding in shipping and dividing the number of blades won) are $1.06 up to $3.04 average per blade.

Buy new at JoAnn's with coupon.

bearisgray 06-30-2010 02:56 PM

I've gotten some good deals on e-bay.

Better than the Jo-Ann's 50% off coupon.

eleu16 07-06-2010 07:24 PM

when my first cutter wasn't sharp enough to cut fabric I bought a new one...since then I have the old one to cut paper and cardstock...and the new one is only for fabric.
I marked the old one with a P and the new one with a F.

OHSue 11-11-2010 05:45 PM

I bought about 40 Olfa blades on eBay a while ago, so when they get dull, I don't hesitate to change them. I got a really good price, but I bid on them and I am up very late so it is a bit easier to win some of the auctions.

That was my exact thoughts. I either use HF blades when I can get them, or I order a bunch on ebay for way less then the price he gets for sharpening.

pgthom 11-11-2010 08:20 PM

JoAnne's has them on sale 50% right now. You have to ask for the multi packs at our store, as they are (sadly) small enough to pocket and walk out. (I'm in MI)

I also have this sharpener (tho' not in the kids toy box..LOL) and find it works well, and gives me longer use on old blades. Had a nick in one, and it pretty well removed it. About $15. if you pay full price, which I try never to do!
