I have used sheets many times. Even some that I have bought at yard sales. I am on a limited budget so I have to buy what I can afford. The few that I have had done by a LAQ, have never seemed to cause her a problem. Go for it.

Sheets for backing

Gorgeous fabrics! I can see why you want that sheet, it's perfect!

I was given a partially quilted quilt to finish for a person and it already had a sheet as the backing. I machine quilted it on my domestic machine without any problem. Others are correct about the tight weave of sheeting. Would be very difficult to hand quilt but I didn't notice any problem with my domestic machine. Good luck and I'm certain you will be pleased with the results.

I have used sheets on occasion, if they were all or at least 80% cotton. Since I only machine quilt, it wasn't a problem, however, I've heard that it's different for hand quilters. I've learned that there are no"rules" in quilting, so if there are no rules you can't break any of them. LOL

I have a couple of times and it worked fine. your quilt is gorgeous!

GABBYABBY 01-21-2013 09:06 AM

Yes, you can use sheets for the back of your quilts and you can also cut them up to use with
other material for your quilt tops too. I buy the cheaper flat sheets so the thread count will
be lower and is better to sew on your machines. Try it, you will love it!!!

I have used sheets, not new ones, but many times washed ones. I find that when I buy a sheet set, the bottom sheet wears out much faster, due to my rough heels, mostly. So the top sheets get washed plenty, but I don't find they are stained or faded with wear like the bottom sheet. I have used the 300 tc after being washed with no problems on my machine. I don't think I would ever use a new one because I feel it would be too dense.

Great job. Colors are perfect. Hope the sheet works for you.

topstitch 01-21-2013 10:39 AM

as long as the thread count is low, 300 or lower, it will be unlikely that you will have a problem quilting a quilt with a sheet backing. At least I find it so on my LA.

OH MY GOODNESS!!!! I just love what you made there. Of course I love pink, lavender, reds and blue. This blue is perfect. You did a wonderful job. Love everything about it. Thanks so much for sharing this with me. It is terrific. Gee....bet you can't tell I really like what you did.

Did you see the gorgeous quilt Rose made and sent to me for Christmas. What a wonderful surprise. First time I ever had a bed quilt of my very own. She is such a sweet lady.

I say yes, full steam ahead on the sheet issue, I too use them successfully all the time.
I say wow what an awesome job on your quilt! Isn't it fun to do something without a pattern and just wing it? And just to add, I really like that you used two different whites in your quilt center. I think the little bit of difference adds a special note of interest.

I've never used a sheet, but have friends who do. They say to get the ones with the lowest thread count (aka the cheapie ones) and they will work fine. Love your quilt, by the way. I think I'll try this and use the little twister heart pattern for the center.

I had a friend that bought a sheet for this quilt she made and the gal that does her longarm quilting told her to wash it 4 times and then she could use it.

Good to know that LA quilters might have a problem with sheets. I have heard that they can be difficult for hand quilters. i say go for it,too.

we use sheets on our LA ....ALL the time....we've been LA'ing over 12 years without a problem one using sheets

AnnaF 01-21-2013 04:36 PM

I've have had clients bring sheets for me to use as a backing on their quilt and have never had a problem with sheets at all. My Gammill is up to the job.

Pat625 01-21-2013 05:18 PM

I hand quilt and use sheets many times without a bit of trouble

barny 01-21-2013 05:32 PM

My sister had a longarmer quilt dozens of quilts and all my sister used for backing was pretty sheets. No problem. I don't know what kind of machine she had.

kookey426 01-21-2013 05:39 PM

I quilt on my DSM and I have always used sheets! Sometimes I can find 350 thread count and they were so soft and cuddly , they almost felt like flannel! Don't buy anything 250 thread count or less though and GOOD LUCK,ENJOY!!!!

I have used sheets many times before and will again. I have sent them to the long arm quilter also and she has never complained once. I even made a beautiful lap quilt out of a Waverly sheet and put the companion fabric on the back which I quilted on my Bernina. I have no complaints about these quilts.

As a project for a friend, I agreed to LAQ a quilt she'd made for a grandson. She brought a sheet for the back. Well, live and learn. The tight weave played havoc with the action of the machine. No needles broken, although I did change needles several times. The top thread would go down and be caught just fine, but the weave put so much pressure on the thread, it didn't always come back up. Big loops all over the back side. Of course it didn't act up when I was testing it. It took me days to get it all ripped out. More practicing and many calls to the manufacturer, I finally called the friend and explained the situation. She said she wasn't concerned, her grandson wouldn't even notice. I didn't charge her, but I'll never do it again.

I've used sheets without any problems.

Beautiful fabrics and the sheet really matches well. Good luck!

justflyingin 01-21-2013 10:05 PM

I have used sheets many, many times for my charity quilts and only had problems one time. It was when the fabric was really nice--very, very densely woven (and a very nice hand--it was so smooth) and I did have problems with my Janome 7700 skipping stitches. All the other times, no problems!

bischoffjac 01-21-2013 11:04 PM

Your quilt is beautiful. I love the colors you have. I have only done a few quilts. I have used sheets for the back on every one. They have work out great.

SueDor 01-22-2013 03:29 AM

What a great match, I would use it.

erindipity 01-22-2013 04:30 AM

Very pretty quilt! I've only been quilting about 9 months and 4 of my quilts have flat bed sheets for backing. Three were new sheets, bought on sale for $7.50 (queen size). One was made out of a set of my mothers sheets. They had been washed a few times but still in great condition. This one is on my bed and washed frequently (two Pomeranian and a cat think they own the bed!) It looks great. The top sheet was used as the back and the fitted used through out the top. Whenever I can find nice sheets at the thrift store or new on sale, I buy them! Oh and I quilt on my domestic machine- no issues thus far.
