sheets used as backing

Hi, I have a large scrap quilt which would require 8 1/2 yrds backing. I'm going to tie it, and I was thinking of using a sheet as the back. I remember there was some discussion about this a while ago, and some people advised about thread count, but I couldn't find the message. Any advise???

I like using the 200 thread count sheets as backing. They are very close to the same feel of regular quilting cotton. Not too thin and not too tightly woven to be difficult to quilt either by hand or machine.

I have made several quilts with sheets, no problems whatsoever with threads breaking, a problem I had read would happen.

It's a scrap quilt to be used not a cherished heirloom so use the sheet! I use sheets all the time - both flannel and cotton and machine quilt them. They wash and wear well and I can find them for under $10. I'd be lucky to find backing (in Canada) for $10 a metre and I'd need 6 metres for a large quilt.

I like to use sheets as backing for larger quilts, and I tie many of them. I am happy with the results.

I use sheets too if I like the design or color or just need a really big backing..

I also used 200 ct. sheets , they work great.

If the sheets are a really high thread count, they will be harder to sew through. Otherwise, go for it. I have used sheets in the past and been well satisfied. The experts tend to say that one should not use them because they are so tightly woven that a needle will split the threads and weaken the quilt. This is equally true of batiks, but is less of a problem with hand tying.

Love tied quilts---do show us when complete; yes, I have used sheets many times, poly cotton too as long as they resemble cotton and thickness ,have had no problems with them.
