I HAVE ALOT OF VINTAGE HANKIES THAT I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE INTO A QUILT BUT HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO DO IT. SOMEONE TRIED TO SHOW ME HOW TO MAKE A HANKIE INTO A BUTTERFLY AND I REALLY DIDN'T LIKE IT. I AM OPEN TO ANY AND ALL SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO GET STARTED. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Hello and welcome from an Iowa girl!
Shirley there was just a thread on Hankie quilts--and now I can't find it--darn. Anyway go to the Search feature above and click on it. Type in "hankie", or "hanky" or "handkerchief" and you will find a multitude of ideas to look at! Good luck.

Here is a quilt I saw a few yrs ago

She took the hankies and cut them into 4 and sewed them onto the quilt block. it is really pretty.

Welcome, Shirley! I have seen them just sewed on to sqaures, and sewn together, its so pretty, and old fashioned looking!

I saw one at the last quilt show. The hankys were sewn to a pretty fabric square. Simple and delicate.

i thought about putting each hankie on a square so i could use the entire hankie and not have to cut it - i'm still thinking about it - maybe thats what i will have to do - thanks

sounds like a winner to me - the only problem is that i have alot of flowery hankies - of course i could use plain white for those - how would you attach the hankies?

shirleyh 05-25-2010 07:24 PM

loved the picture - its just what i would like to do - would it make a difference if some of the hankies were larger than others?

I don't think so, it would be just like a block sampler with a variety of block types, only yours would be a hankie block sampler.

You can stitch them down along the outer edge. That would be easier to do on a square/rectangular hankie. On an irregular shape, I would stitch it down by hand.

Shirley I have a book that I could send you to use. But would like to have it back at some time. What do you think about this. The book that I have cost 29$ but I will send to you to barrow.

thank you soooo much but I think that I have decided to put each hankie on a square and then put all the squares together - this way I can work them anywhere if I need to hand sew some of the squares and I'm sure that I will have to since some of the hankies are different shapes. It was so nice of you to offer your book - if I decide on a different way I will be sure to contact you for a loan of the book. Hope this way works out for me, since this is my first quilt I want it to be half-way nice. Thanks again for being so thoughtful.
