shirtbox quilts?
 

has anyone here made a shirtbox quilt?

i saw the pattern in a kaffe fassett book. i doubt he invented the idea, but it's kind of fun if i don't get too wrapped up in trying to match the stripes.

i would love to see pictures if you've made one of these. right out of the gate i know i am not going to follow his pattern because my boxes are going to be different sizes after i square them up. should be a good design wall kind of activity if/when i ever have enough squares to actually construct a top :)

i saw this shirt and couldn't resist it. the italians have a real flare :) (the shirt was 100% cotton, made in italy.)

no, he didn't invent the idea but he he so fab at it ;-) yours look good!

Guess I don't get it....why are they called shirtbox quilts? Just because they are of striped fabric? Look nice though!

I hadn't heard of the term Shirt Box but have used stripes and border prints quite a bit- like my avatar photo (from a 2007 pattern; not "new").
Here is a Colorado block.

Dumb question here. Are they made out of old shirts and that's why they are called shirt box, or do they use shirting material?

i called them that because fassett did. i guess any striped fabric sewn this way could be called that, but i liked the idea of using that oxford cloth. so many men's business shirts are made of gorgeous cottons.

I was just reading an article last night in a new quilt magazine that will answer all of your questions, give you great diagrams, troubleshooting tips and lots of inspiration!!!! You need to see this! It's McCall's Quilting March/April 2014 The top of the magazine says "Trendy to Traditional Designs you'll Love" in cream on a turquoise strip. The pattern/lesson that you're looking for is "Home on the Range". I don't usually rave about things but this is such good info and ideas!

The secret of success in making these striped quilts is in the folding and cutting. Ive made a few and if you follow directions they will sew together beautifully. I love Kaffes stripes. If you want to make something smaller and use only 1 fabric (multi size stripes)' you may like this pattern "One For The Money"

I have made 4 wallhanging. This company has great service and good directions.

I knew there was a reason why I have been drawn to stripes lately. Thanks for this post Stillclock, and the info on the McCall's mag teacherbailey. Jenny Penny, that is a beautiful block. I have never seen one like it. Hmmmm.....
