Shopping for a new machine
 

After struggling with my old machine for many years I am shopping for a new one. I am considering a Viking Opal 670. Does anyone have any advice for me? I do some quilting but only small comfort quilts for a children's charity. Thanks so much. Long Time Sewer

Hi & Welcome to the board from Michigan. Just a question so we can direct you. Do you actually want to quilt the quilt, or piece the top?

I personally like Janome machines. They offer many models from basic up to deluxe. There is sure to be one to match your needs. Also Janome is priced lower than Viking and you get more feet etc. with the machine. If not sure on what machine you want I would go to a few stores and test drive different brands and models to see what feels best for you. Good luck.

Welcome from NJ. Don't have any info on that specific Viking model but I do love my Viking Platinum. Not a seconds worth of trouble in the 10+ years I've owned it. It handles just about anything I throw at it save boat covers and really thick suede (think industrial uses). Otherwise from sheer curtain fabrics to heavy upholstery fabric and everything in between, it does a great job. Auto tension so no messing with that and everything still sews beautifully. Good luck.

Welcome from Kentucky. I recommend that you try a variety of machines before you buy. You will get a feel for your favorite after you try 3 or 4 machines.

Welcome to the board. You need to get out there and test drive everything out there in your price range. DSM are just like cars, you got to get behind the steering wheel and see what works best for you. I bought my Bernina 1530 at the last day of a quilt show and got a really good price. This was back in the 90s and I am still quilting on it.
