Shot Cotton

Just heard about shot cotton, was just wondering what exacting it is, and what quilt projects it would work best in.:eek:

Welcome from Southern California. I hope you find as much inspiration as I do from this site. Here is a previous post:

Hope it helps answer your question. I prefer using Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton.

I'm not a fan of shot cotton. It is so thin you can read a newspaper thru it. One of the LQS said they would not be ordering anymore because no one was buying it.

Shot cotton is woven with one color of thread for the weft and a different color of thread for the warp. This makes it seem kind of shimmery, and gives the appearance of changing color as you move it.

As others have said, it is rather thin. I purchased some Kaffe Fassett shot cottons for a quilt, but I haven't started it yet. I bought them to match some Kaffe quilting fabrics I had in my stash.

When I was calling the LQSes in my area looking for the Kaffe shot cottons, one owner told me she's no longer going to carry the Kaffe shots, but has switched to the Kaufman shots instead because they're a better quality. I don't know how true this is; I got the sense she was lobbying for me to buy the Kaufman shots because that's what she carries. I have not yet had the chance to fondle the Kaufman shot cottons for comparison.

Studio e has the Pepper Cory shot cotton. I dont think it is "thin" though. Nice quality.

I have some of the Peppered Cottons that Sandygirl mentions and they are really nice quality, not thin at all. The colors are beautiful and they do shimmer. I got mine from AQS: https://shop.americanquilter.com/213...ollection.html at member prices and on sale. I'm cleaning out my quilt studio and just came across them. I had bought a bunch for a challenge but have a lot leftover.

Really pretty and nice to work with!

We are carrying the "Peppered Cottons" where I work. They're pretty nice.

Welcome to the board and thanks for asking about this topic since I must have missed it the first time around, never even heard the term.

It's pretty in an application with a frayed edge such as a rag quilt or rag appliqué. The fray is a different color giving a unique effect.

I made this quilt with a fat quarter collection of the Kaffe Fassett shot cottons. They are, indeed, quite thin - but the colors are just stunning. I paired them with a linen cotton blend which was much heavier, but had no problems with the project coming together.
