I have made and given hundreds of quilts to family, friends, and most to charity. I did sell one quilt about 20 years ago and it’s the only one I regret.

I have given away most of my quilts over the years. It is my hobby and I like to spend time doing it, so I just give them away. I had the pleasure of seeing a child I did not know with a quilt I had made for a low income baby items give away. Made me smile all day. He seemed to really like it and looked very comfy in his stroller.

As quilters we have lots of scrap batting and fabrics, or all the quilters I know do, so it's a great way to use it up. It takes only a little time and fabrics to lifts someone's day. And you get a lift as well by donating. I also make Quilts of Valor and small community quilts that are given to the police to give out at emergencies. I have all the quilts I and my family can use so It feels good to pass along something I love doing. In 50+ years of quilting, I have only sold one quilt. I did not enjoy the experience.

I was wondering about this. My mom had meals on wheels for several years and so enjoyed the cards etc that occasionally came with her meals. I recently really enjoyed making mug rugs.......maybe I will make some inquiries and see if there is something similar where I am.

I've made 80 quilts so far, including table runners, placemats, tree skirts. I have kept eight, but the rest were all gifted to family and friends. I get so much satisfaction out of giving these quilts away. I've actually had friends break into tears when I offered them a quilt. I keep all the wonderful thank you notes, emails and texts that I receive. To me, there is nothing more thrilling than to hear that a five-year-old still sleeps with my quilt every night.

I like to give them away to charitable enterprises...shelters, hospitals etc. But I am mindful that one of my great aunts was very kind when she heard I was taking up quilting in my early 20's...she took me aside, showed me a box of quilts she'd made and invited me to choose one. I was so pleased! And my mom nearly fainted as my great aunt was notoriously parsimonious.

I still have that quilt, which I also took to hospital with me for the births of my three children. In those days, on those budgets, my GA and her friends quilted with old garments and bargain fabrics, so the quilt I have is thick but soft polyester something...suitable for a light jacket I would think.

Which is all by way of saying...keep a few to give to special someones.

There is only one of my quilts in the house. That is because hubby claimed it as his own. LOL! All of the others have gone to family members, charities and silent auctions. I have recently thought of selling small items at the local chapter of the Assistance League in their Senior Sampler store. I was thinking that would help fund threads, battings and backings for the ufo's I have on hand.
