Should I use High Loft Batting

I have now pieced a full size top and a crib size top. I decided to practice on the small top and am trying to use a high loft batting that I was given (I purchased white and natural for the full size). I want to hand quilt the full size, but thought with the small one I could use my regular machine with a quilting foot. My stitches are minute. I tried and tried adjusting the tension, stitch size, and everything else you can imagine, and nothing worked. I decided to go ahead and hand stitch and am still having a hard time. I have never quilted, but have done lots of needlework. Could it be the thickness of the batting giving me such a hard time? Any suggestions?

Sorry so long.

I find high loft batting hard to deal with. I think it is good to use when you are tying a quilt. The tied part makes a dramatic change in depth from the untied. When quilting, it shifts, makes it hard to adjust your stitches, I could go on and on.

Just my opinion

I'm not sure about the machine quilting. In regards to the hand quilting, the high loft batting is hard to hand quilt. I know that this won't help now but I like to use wool batting to hand quilt.

Sounds like your answer might be to tie instead of hand or machine quilting.

A high loft batting isn't intended for hand quilting, although it is often used for stab stitch quilting. Even for machine quilting, unless you have something like the 'Big Foot', your results may not be consistent.

High loft is usually for tying not machine or hand quilting, you might end up frustrated

You may also want to rethink the Warm and White for hand quilting too. It has a scrim that makes hand quilting difficult.

I always check the package for recommendations for quilting. My main battings are Warm and Natural (or warm and white) and poly down for my machine quilting. I used a wool batt that was lovely to machine quilt thru (buttah!) and I think it is recommended for hand quilting too. (washing instructions are different for the wool tho..so for me its a toss up). High loft batting I have in my stash suggest tying only.

high loft batting is good for tied quilts- or big-stitch quilting (where you use perle cotton or embroidery floss and the stitches are 1/4" long---it is quite difficult to machine or hand quilt in a (regular method) i bet if you switch to a low loft batt you will be much happier.

This quilt has extra high loft batting and it was no trouble to quilt on my domestic sewing machine. The quilt is much better than the picture
