We have quilted on the back---due to the fact that the design on the front was too busy and you could not see the pencil marks for quilting!

I quilted several colorwash wall hangings from the back. On one I drew a pattern of vines and leaves and hand quilted it with metalic thread (something that I probably wouldn't use again for hand quilting).the quilting showed up on the front as texture but the back was interesting too. Even if the only one who knows it is there is my daughter. It was a gift for her.

I never have, never thought about it, but I love the idea and plan to try it.

My first quilting instructor recommended that when there is a design you can follow on the backing fabric. I quilted one quilt that way because I used Minkee for the backing and found a recommendation to quilt with the Minkee up. Worked put very well.

I had never thought or heard about quilting from the back. I am just learning how to use my longarm quilting machine, can I quilt on the backing fabric on it? I would just have to load the quilt upside down. I think it would be easier to do a pattern fmq from the back.

My friend wanted her daughter's quilt to have some inspirational quotes on the back!
The front was pieced and the back was blue fleece! I turned it over and we wrote all over the back and you could only see that it was quilted on the front! I had never thought about it! |

Thanks for any help you can give me. Diane |
what an "aha" moment!!!! I have never, ever, thought of doing that, but what a great idea!! One would have to have just the right quilt to do it on, where the design from the back would suit the front, but, hey - why not!?! Thanks for thinking outside the box!!!!

If the front of my quilt is a very busy print, then I'll have a solid back and quilt from the back side so I can see where I'm going.

I have not tried this yet but think I will.
