Side Winder bobbin winder

One of my Christmas presents was a Side Winder bobbin winder. I think I am really going to enjoy this toy, but the first bobbin I did was backwards. At first I couldn't figure out why it didn't load in my machine like my other bobbins, and then I saw the difference. (I use a Pfaff and the bobbin only fits one way in my machine. With the bobbin loaded correctly, the thread came out from the bottom of the bobbin and not off the top.)

I found that if I put the bobbin in "upside down" in the bobbin winder, it comes out the right way for my machine. The newly wound bobbin and I are sewing up a storm now.

Has anyone else had this experience? And what do I do with the bobbin that is wound backwards? Just pull the thread off or maybe pretend it is just a spool of thread for hand sewing??

Rewind it by putting the bobbin on the thread spool holder and wind to a new bobbin. I bought a used side winder at a quilt show and I love it. Always hated having to unthread the machine to wind a new bobbin so now use one spool of thread for winding bobbins and another for sewing on the machine. Haven't had any problems with the thread being backwards though.

I have one machine that when winding the bobbin I have to put the bobbin on the winder upside down or it won't unwind correctly. Does that make sence? Anyway I love my sidewinder. I use it for every machine I have including my Tin Lizzie, it fills a new bobbin as you sew. When starting a new color and don't have anything to match on a bobbin, sidewinder will only fill about 1/2 of a size M bobbin but it works untill Lizzie has filled a whole bobbin.

I've had one of these for awhile. I have found that I have to flip my bobbin to load it correctly (for my Viking.)
Unfortunately, I've never gotten it to wind a bobbin correctly. It always loads unevenly and lopsided.
I've tried and tried to adjust the tension to correct it to no avail.

I've resorted to using the winder on my machine. :(

Okay, thanks all. I had not even thought about rewinding this backwards bobbin to a new one! That will work.

I found that if I wind the thread completly encircling one of the guides located just before where your bobbin goes on, the bobbin will have more tension on it and it winds smoother. I hope this makes sense. :)

Anyone use it sucessfully for a Viking? I want to but one but it would be to use with my Viking and Featherweight.

They also work better with the weight of batteries, even if you are plugging it in.

I like mine.

I use mine... never had an issue with having to put them upside down or right side up.. they all work on my pfaff..

I use mine for my Viking.. you'll have to place your bobbin with the "H" faced down. :)

My sister's Pfaff also has a bobbin that can go in either way, but mine is only one way. go figure.

I got one for Christmas and it seems like a pain to me. I don't mind unthreading to wind a bobbin then rethreading to sew. Guess I'm strange.

You have to wind the Elna bobbins backwards also. Mine will not work with Viking bobbins.

This was the best birthday gift I got a few years ago, love it.

The instructions on mine say that the bobbins for Singer Centaur II and Husqvarna Viking sewing/quilting machines that take bobbins 412 09 75-45 Sure Fit do not work with it. Mine is a Simplicity SideWinder. Hope that helps.

Absolutely! I found that out the hard way after I'd done about 6 of them! I just put the "wrong" bobbins on the thread spool holder and wound onto the upside down bobbin. Love my sidewinder! My old one (same cost, same model) did not "accept" my new Pfaff bobbins, so I tried a few at the store and one of them fit!
