sigh....

Working on a quilt for basset hound rescue. A friend had purchased a throw with a hand painted panel with hounds. Whoever did the lovely artwork put this dogawful badly mitered afterthought of a border and backed it with one of those woven aphgans with fringe. Truly awful but the handpainted panel was in good shape so since my friend watched one of my hounds for a week in the spring I offered to take it apart and finish it. All was going fabulously. Keep in mind I'm a fairly new quilter and I always attempt things I haven't a clue how to do. I squared the panel and framed it with a small border so I could add this adorable checkerboard border. It went on perfectly! So impressed by myself I decided to make another border using the small wedge ruler. I watched the tutorial half a dozen times, then started cutting yesterday to sew today. I had almost enough together for the top border a little while ago when I realized that when I would go to sew it to the quilt I would lose every single point. When I sewed the triangles together I was supposed to have a 1/4" overhang at the point-not at the base. Back up and start again.

Well, bummer!! I might be tempted to pretend those triangles weren't supposed to have points.! :)

Oh my, too bad. Maybe as Dina said, a design choice?

Son rescued two boxer/bassett mixes. Siblings. Very adorable.

Trim more of the points away or rip and sew? Sometimes you just have one of those days.:(

Neesie 07-05-2014 10:05 AM

Ripping out and re-doing, is how I managed to get a lot of my sewing experience. ;) Hang in there! :)

blondeslave 07-05-2014 11:42 AM

I had lots of the colored triangles cut and needed to cut more of the cream ons anyway so just started over. I'm almost back where I left off with the bad border so not too bad. I'm just glad I caught it before I had all 4 sides of the border done. Sadly, this is how I learn although the tutorial could have been a bit clearer. I had a similar experience with half square triangles that were thismuch to small and had to do them over.

ManiacQuilter2 07-05-2014 01:38 PM

I would too. Good luck in your project and hang in there. We have ALL learned to be better quilters thru our mistakes. You know the old saying of when you find lemons, make lemonade !!

MadQuilter 07-05-2014 01:52 PM

And that is how we learn. Welcome to the oops club.

Weezy Rider 07-05-2014 02:20 PM

They aren't triangles, they are volcanos. Mt. Fuji doesn't come to a point.

Doggramma 07-05-2014 02:47 PM

Oh my goodness. I hope the hounds lovers appreciate all the extra work you're doing and bid high!

A person really doesn't learn when the quilt goes together without a problem. We do learn when we have to fix the issues though! I learn something with every quilt I make -- like the BSR doesn't work unless it is actually plugged into the machine.

earthwalker 07-05-2014 06:35 PM

Don't think I have made a sewing project quilted or otherwise without such a "learning curve". Look forward to seeing this quilt...please post a pic for us.

citruscountyquilter 07-06-2014 03:09 AM

I enjoy the finished product but the main reason I quilt is for the process of doing and learning and along the way I have had many oops moments. In fact, the next program at guild is on this subject. People are asked to bring in their oops as an illustration of what not to do and what they learned from it. There was no problem in getting examples from most members!

Some days, it just doesn't pay to take the cover off your sewing machine.

Exactly what I was thinking, I'd cut a good half inch off the points and say I wanted it that way. Unless you have lots of fabric.

I'm sorry but I couldn't get past 'Basset Rescue'. I am a total Basset nut and have my name in the hat for a baby from a pound. Sure hope I get 'Maggie'. We have had a total of 9 Bassets in our lifetime, what wonderful dogs.

I would not worry about those points !

wolph33 07-06-2014 08:28 AM

sorry about your issues but you also are learning lessons you will remember. show us the project when done

caspharm 07-06-2014 08:56 AM

Patience! It sounds like you have it in hand. Can't wait to see the finished project!

MargeD 07-06-2014 10:40 AM

I think we've all been there and done that at some point in our quilting journey. Sorry, sounds like a great project, even if you do have to back up and start again. I applaud what you've done so far - it's encouraging to step outside our comfort zone now and again.

I'll see if I can attach a picture of what I'm aiming for. There will be a white on whitborder followed by the wedge border then another white on white border and finally a 6" final border of this beautiful batik that has a brown background but includes every color in the quilt. I got the top wedge border put together today and need to figure out the width of the first white on white border. You're only seeing part of the panel. Forgot to add. There was a stain on the panel that wouldn't wash out so I appliqued the heart over it. First time I ever appliqued something. I could have made this project so much easier...

You are doing great on it & a great save. You will find, as time goes by, that there will be lots of oops in quilting. Sometimes you can grin & bear it & finish the quilt or make a design change. Other times you just can't let it go & rip & fix it.

leighway 07-06-2014 02:47 PM

I'm sorry you got bumfuzzled by the pattern but I share your love of Bassets and wanted to thank you for helping the rescue. Doug, the Basset is my avatar and we'll be going for a little rescued girl Basset sometime this next year.

Weezy I really like your attitude! Same with Mt. St Hellenes in WA. she blew her points off in the '80's and is now a flat top!

I had the problem a long time ago and threw the quilt away 3 different times. Each time someone (husband, daughter, etc.) would bring it back. Being a perfectionist I just could not finish it because of the points. One day my friend saw it in the garbage and I told her my problem, she said, "ever think about calling it a pointless wonder?" Problem solved and my daughter loves it and never takes it of her bed summer or winter. :) Bittersweet story, but true. My daughter knows of my problem being a perfectionist and she said, "Get over it, mom." I'm trying!!
