I am thinking that I would like to make a quilt for my mom with everyone at the funeral/memorial signing blocks that I can piece together later into a quilt. I have never made one and don't even know what I need. I read some things online that said to cut out squares (probably muslin ) then iron freezer paper on - also lightly make a border on the block to allow for seam allowance. Any thing else I need to know? or is there a better/different way to do this. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks. Teresa (Otis)

I did something like this for my sister's baby shower 2 months ago. I used a honey bun and a solid white jelly roll. As the guests came in I had everyone sign a wish or advice for the new mom. I had put masking tape (the blue kind that you can use on painted walls) and then had a few Ultra fine Sharpies for them to use. I used the pattern off moda bake shop

My condolences on your loss - it's never easy, but you have come up with a project that will keep you busy - isn't quilting a blessing? I suggest you use Pigma pens. I see the use of sharpies above, but am unfamiliar with those in the wash, and would worry about them running. The border on the block must be clear to those who sign so that they won't write in the seam allowances. Best of luck.

Agreed- I penciled in a 1/4" border on each edge of my white strips, then requested that the message be kept inside the pencil lines. I did a test strip of both a pigma pen and a sharpie and found that as far as going thru the wash the pigma pen seemed to fade more than the Sharpie.
