Signing Your Quilt On The Binding
 

I was watching Craftsy class with Elizabeth Hartman and I noticed that there was a patch of binding on each of her quilt examples that was different from the rest of the binding on each quilt. I can't see it really well, but it looks like that patch has her name on it. It appears that it's actually her label for the quilt. What a great idea! I've never seen this before. with this technique, you could put your name, or the name of the quilt on one side of the binding and the date on the other. This method would eliminate a separate label that would have to be sewn onto the back.

I have signed the binding on my quilts for years. It's quick simple and works on all light color bindings. Quilt judges frown on it. Time to update the judging rules.

there is a tutorial on that somewhere. to make sure you sew it correctly so it will show the way you want to.

I use a Pentel Gel Fabric marking pen. The ink gel still looks like brand new, no fading at all on my older quilts that have been washed a lot. I pick a spot on the back binding and write what info I want on it. Sometimes I write big and sometimes I go small and neat.

As for the judging rules ..... Labels need to be covered, so that they are not influenced by a name while judging.
That would go for the same with your binding. Just pin a piece of fabric overtop.

I like the idea! It could help reduce theft too, since removing a label is easy, but removing the binding would destroy its looks.

OMG...I never thought about anyone trying to steal any of my quilts, but then again, they're not exactly show quality. I guess that could be an issue at some of those big shows and fairs. I think that if anyone ever did steal a quilt of mine, I'd consider it a compliment...LOL.

It would be fun to print some fabric up that would be used just for the signature on your quilts. You could design it to look clever and spiffy, like designing a business card. I wonder how little of fabric you could print at Spoonflower.
