Silicone Baking Mat
 

I heard that you could use a Silicone Baking Mat in place of a Super Slider. But there was some kind of spray that you need to use before you can free-motion quilt. Does anyone know a spray that will slick up the mat before quilting?

I have a silicone baking mat It's not that slick, more sticky like. Fabric would stick to it. I've seen the very thin oven sheets that some use but they won't stay in place like the Slider. I learned long ago I was wasting money trying to find a cheap sub for the item that would do the job without frustration.

I have used the oven liner in place of the more expensive Slider. It does work quite well. the only problem I have is keeping it in place so I don't sew thru it.

I use one on my HQ16 too. I have to tape the edges down with blue painters tape otherwise it would slide all over the place.

What did you do to keep the mat from being sticky? I tried silicone spray but the surface is stil sticky.

You don't spray these with anything, just tape the edges, cut out the area around the needle and sew. They are slick enough that you can FM with them easily. Whatever you do, don't try to stick them down to the bed of your machine with any kind of adhesive spray. Ask me how I know and how long it took to clean 505 from the bed of my Janome? lol

I do the same for my Janome 7700 and the oven liner. I haven't used a Supreme Slider for comparison, but it works really well for me. I wouldn't try a silicone baking liner (as asked about in the OP). Those have a completely different surface than the slick oven liner.

These are oven liners, not baking mats. Baking mats are just thin silicone hot pads, I have one beside my stove to sit hot things on. The oven liners are very thin sheets, not much thicker than paper and work very well for FM quilting. I get them at a dollar store and get 2 out of 1 sheet, costs about $5 for 2. Have used them for years, they last a long time as long as you don't sew through them.

Wouldn't a piece of vinyl work that you can see through?
