Silk Batting
Has anyone tried this? A LQS has some, but it is very expensive and I wonder if it would be worth trying it.

I took a class, and the teacher passed around a cotton quilt with silk batting in it. She was a hand quilter, and she said silk was her favorite batting to use -- but expensive. The quilt had a lovely drape to it, and she said it washed up beautifully.

i have used Dream Orient- which is a silk/bamboo blend- it is such a wonderful batt! it's not (appropriate for every quilt but for the special ones- well worth the cost- i also LOVE Dream Wool---it is my favorite batt- but again reserved for special quilts-
i love all of the batts from the Dream Company- and have found the Dream Poly is a great batt for kids/utility quilts. |
I quilted a quilt for a customer using a Bamboo/silk batting...wonderful hand and quilted beautifully. Best feeling batting I have ever touched.

It does have a very luxurious hand to it ... but once it is inside of the quilt .... you can't feel what you paid for... Silk is a wonderfully warm fiber.. but silk is prone to dry rot. I 'm not sure I would go for the expense of it . There are pro's and cons .. so measure them against what it is you are really trying to accomplish.

A friend of mine loves to use silk batting. He is a very skilled longarm quilter and for him it's the best batting ever. I've seen some of his quilts that have been washed several times and used a lot and the quilts are still very soft and have a nice drape.
