I love to applique on my quilts and also wanted to get into the more "Art Quilting"...they all suggest using silk thread. I have looked around ...perhaps not enough..do you know of where I can buy a "package combination of silk thread that doesn't cost an arm and leg? I would perfer that on a spool. I found some wraped around cardboard ( not for machine) at a good price..1/2 off..but like I said I'd prefer it on a spool.

Two hundred yards wouldn't go very far, and if $18 for a cone is out of your price range, have you considered Rayon? It has a sheen which you may or may not want, but is certainly strong enough to machine with (I have been using it today) and it is much cheaper.

I use this thread for my nicer machine quilting quilts. It's worth every penny.
It's like quilting with butter and a hot needle! and makes my so so quilting look fantastic.

The thread spool collections at the site posted are very reasonable in price. Aren't they pretty? For hand appliqué a spool will last a very long time.

The collection at Connecting Threads looks really interesting for using with hand applique. Is it better to use silk than rayon or cotton for hand applique?

you can buy just a few spools here to make sure you like it first before investing tons of cash. (i'm sure you're gonna love it). they have variegated too.

its a few dimes more but you can pick the colors you want and buy just a few at a time.
