silk tie quilt
 

I would like to make 3 pieced wall hangings from silk ties and was wondering if anyone has any advice on working with silk and also ideas for a pattern. I was thinking that I should do paper piecing although I have not tried this technique.

I did a tie quilt with every sort of material ties have been made out of down thru the years. I used Pellon fusible webbing on the back of all ties. It helped keep the ties from slipping around and stretching. The hard part about ties is that they are all bias edges and stretch like mad.

I have seen some beautiful Dresdan Plates made from ties, and see them alot in Crazy Quilts.

I am making a necktie wall hanging using my hubby's ties (he passed away last year). I am fusing with Pellon SF101 to stabilize the strips. Only the center strip, placed on the diagonal of a muslin 9 1/2 inch square, is cut as a tie shape, but a little more narrow. I am putting narrow strips after that. Some of his ties were silk, some polyester, and yes...all cut on the bias.
I will make 3 blocks wide and 4 vertical.

I have a couple of projects to make with ties so I am happy to see a discussion on this topic. Thanks for all the info. Did those of you who already made something out of ties wash them first and if so, how did you do that ..... in a mesh bag, just soak them, etc.??? Thanks for any help. (I'll bet there has already been a posting on this topic so guess I should have researched it here on the board first.)

I just made a tuffet for a friend out of ties. The hard part was that they weren't the same size, but I managed. I found that taking the ties completely apart helped. I can't remember if it was here or somewhere else, but someone made a box tie quilt out of ties. Very cute. BTW, not looking forward to working with ties again any time soon.

KLO, the process is easy, just time consuming. I ripped them apart. Then used Woolite and a bucket. I washed "sets of ties" three times each. Ties absorb sweat and I was surprised that I knew who wore which tie due to the smell. Some smelled like Dad some like my Granddad. The washing machine just didn't work for me, I always ended up with a huge tangled mess and tossed it away. I found a pattern on the Moda website for jelly rolls by SewCraftyJess. It worked perfect. toverly, love your quilted ties. The work that was put into it makes it an outstanding quilt! I would love to do one similar to this.

Lots of good ideas here = hope I remember them if I ever decide to tackle a project like this.

I have been collecting ties, but haven't got enough to really get into a project yet (am still deciding). I have however washed them. As mentioned ties can get pretty revolting and as I sourced them from charity stores and from deceased relatives some were pretty "whiffy". I just handwashed in a bucket, rinsed several times (once with vinegar) and air dried. I then unpicked them and have stored them together 'til I decide what to do. Will keep watching for ideas/inspiration.
