If you had the opportunity to choose between these 2 machines, which would you most likely choose for the purpose of FMQ? I have been looking for a vintage machine to use specifically for FMQ. Now I find out that I may have the chance to choose between the 2. A friend has a 15-91 that she wants me to take & use indefinitely. I also got a lead on a 301 in good shape & good price.
What do you think? Pros/cons of each for FMQ? |
I would go with the 301. I have one but haven't gotten to try FMQ on it yet. Or go for both if you can.

i would go with both

If I could only have one, it would be the 301. I have one and it is the hardest working little machine!! I even stopped my search for a featherweight, don't want one anymore!

I have both plus many more including feather weights. Love the 301.
I have not FM on it and I think it is hard to find a foot for it since it is a slant shank. I would think the 15-91 would be great for FM and for binding or work with a walking foot. I would like a Singer 201-2 for FM but have not found one yet. The singer 15-91 would be my second pick for the FM. It has a dierect drive and a super good opening. So set the 301 up for piecing and the 15-91 for FM. A girl can never have enough machines. Have fun! I agree with the above poster. If I could have only one machine I would take the Singer 301. |
If you have the opportunity to have both, go for it. That is the only way you will be able to find out which one you like best. Anyway the 15-91 is just borrowed anyway so you can buy the 301 and still have both. What a deal. Good luck.

April1930s.com sells a great free motion foot for the 301. My instructor at my LQS was very impressed with it when AnnieRose and I took a FMQ class. AnnieRose did fine as long as she had a Singer needle in. AnnieRose is my newly acquired 301A. I also purchased a 1/4 inch foot and I've never had straighter seams. Now I have a stitch in the ditch foot, which will debut tomorrow. This little machine has done everything I've asked of her. I have no experience with a 15, but I'd go for both.
