I am looking at a Singer 301 Long bed online. How much working room do they have from the needle to the right side. Does that make sense?

It makes sense. What you are asking for is the harp size.

It is not a long bed in the sense we normally define long bed. The same space is from needle to the right on a short bed as there is on a Singer 301 long bed. The long bed refers to the little flip up attached left of the needle. Short bed was normally in a cabinet and long bed often in a case. Quilting wise there is not much to be gained and the machines are basically identical with the acception of the little flip up attachment being a little longer in the long bed. Hope I make sense.
Opening on both machines to the right, harp space, is the same 7 1/4 inch x 5 1/2 inches. Not bad. I have not been able to find the right set up to do quilting on the slant shank Singer 301 but I find it wonderful for piecing, especially paper piecing. I did get the Singer 15-91 set up for quilting. It is suposed to be the best vintage machine for that job. Thank you for the tip. I know finding the right foot is tricky since it is slant shank.
