Singer 301 on a Quilt Frame?

A couple days ago I was reading a thread in which advice was given for using the 301 on frame. I didn't bookmark it, and now can't find it again....I have a couple inches of successful stitches and then the machine jams and there is a big thread nest on the bottom side. I must admit, I'm not using a darning foot, but instead have on the gathering foot and the presser foot pressure as low as it will go. I see the error in my ways, but I'm not sure I want to invest in ordering a proper darning foot. (I'm on the verge of buying a Bailey 17 or a Crown Jewel.) The machine sews perfect seam when used in the standard fashion. The presser foot is down, the bobbin's threaded properly, machine is oiled and clean, needle is sharp and straight, feed dogs all the way down, stitch length selector set at zero, I've threaded and rethreaded the machine. Am I forgetting anything? Could it be the foot, or lack there of? Thanks.

Try the thread for vintage machine I am sure you can get l lot of help.

you are remembering to put the presser foot in the down position, right? bird nests on the bottom usually means there's a problem with the top tension. make sure your thread is properly seated between the tension discs.

Don't give up yet. There is someone on here who has just the set up you were talking about. I will try to remember who she is and she gave me advice when I was asking about this. I had one 301 and bought a second so I could use it on my used Grace Frame that I found on Craigslist. Be back ASAP. :)

Hi again, Here is the thread I posted way back in May of 2011.

Hope this is the article you were looking for and/or is helpful to you.

Is setting the stitch selector as zero and the neutral position the same thing? My owner's manual says to set the stitch selector at the neutral position for darning.

You really need the correct foot. They are not expensive, so unless you want continuing headaches buy one.

Thanks to everyone for your input. I was thinking no one had replied to my thread because I wasn't getting email notification...still not used to the site revamp. Yes, the presser foot lever is down. I'll try your suggestions, cross my fingers, and hit the foot pedal (which I have taped onto the frame's carriage handles). Thanks again.

Thought I should update this thread in the event anyone uses it to problem solve their own 301 on a frame. My problem, I believe, was that there was backlash on my spool of thread...I taped a large ball bearing onto the top of the spool for a little weight and all has been much better. Thanks to everyone for your advice.
