I am not familiar with the Singer 99 machine. My son was at a flea market and thought he had seen a FW but it was a 99. They wanted $100. for it. Is that a good price and are they worth having to just use as another machine? What would you do? Thanks for your input. pat

In my opinion, and where I live, $100 for a Singer 99 is a little too much. They are definitely worth having as a second machine, but typically these sell for about $35 at garage sales in the metropolitan area. For $100 I would expect a machine with near-perfect decals, good wiring, and a cabinet or wooden carryall in near-perfect condition.
The featherweights can usually be quickly identified because they have a little hinged platform to the left of the needle; this platform can be folded up to make storage more compact. Plus, they are light and easily lifted with one hand. (Other Singers are much heavier.) |
I agree $100.oo is too much, however the 99 is a very good machine, worth having. There is a vintage machine thread here that you can read about and see photos of vintage machines that people buy, how to clean and take care of them. Please join us, we also treadle.

You can find them on ebay for 1/2 that price in good condition.

I brought mine for $25.00, true we had to clean her up and the cabinet needed some work. $100 dollars seems too pricey.
|
Our sewing machine shop had one for $119.00, but of course she was a dealer. Pretty machine though!

I paid $50 for mine in near mint condition (every conceivable accessory) with an equally mint condition cabinet. That said, anything out there regardless of what it is...is only worth how much we want it and what we're willing to pay. We all live in different areas and the going prices for whatever are extremely different depending on our areas. I've seen people purchase fabulous vintage machines for next to nothing which in different areas would cost a lot more money. Of course you can always try to see if they would come down on the price.

I paid about 75.00 for mine on Ebay. That included shipping and it is in perfect condition. Decals and case are like new. I think I would pass unless it is in pristene condition. :P

Great little machine, stitches beautifully. I wouldnt part with mine!

Model 99K Serial No. Y8532609.
Dated July 12 1932 this machine was manufactured in Clydebank Scotland. This is Lin's every day machine inherited from her Grandmother and has its original attachments and manual. Regularly used for School play costumes, toys and repairs. 100 dollars! wow! up to what shape it is! |
100.00 is to much. I saw one for 125.00 at a flea market 2 weeks ago. The guy had a 301 sitting next to it for 50.00. I don't think he realized what he had. I think he thought the smaller the machine the more it was worth.

Dh would have killed me. In the last 3 months I have bought a 15-91, 66-16 and a 403a.

Vintage sewing machine prices are going up. You can't go by what someone paid even six months ago. If it's worth $100 to you, then it's worth $100. That does sound a little high, but it also depends on the condition.

My opportunity was $350.00, and not in good shape. ( Ohio) so, $100 is like a dream for me !

I have a Singer 99 and what I was told about them they are the industeral sewing machine. I purchased my at the Goodwill last year for $65.00.
|
Advertisers like to tag the vintage machines as industrial, when most aren't - they are just well made workhorses. The 99 is a 3/4 size machine like my 128. Not as small as a Featherweight and certainly not light. My 128 weighs 29 pounds.

Thanks so much for all your replys. I will keep it in mind (new) machines. I certainly don't need alot of machines, can't afford them but (they) and quilting things are my addication. Oh well I could be in alot more trouble than this. (guess it comes when you have lost your mate & can do what you want) thanks again for the help, just love this site. pat

I recently bought a Singer Spartan off of Craigslist for $20.00 in excellent condition with a case but no attachments. Works perfectly. The guy wanted $25 and said the needle wouldn't go up and down but the motor ran. So he took the $20 dollars and I took it home and cleaned out the "bird's nest" under the needle. Now it just hums along!! I love it. Last Sat. I bought a light green 99 which needs cleaning but runs perfectly. I paid $20 for it at the pawn shop. Bought a FW off ebay with case but no attachments for $199.99. I have lots of Singer attachments from years ago. Seems I'm getting addicted to these old machines....
