I brought one years ago at the K-Mart store during a demo, it worked great for me and then it seem to have gotten jammed so i (after 4 yrs) gave it to neice who promptly gotten it fixed and using it now.

my mother bought one about the same time. used it until she couldn't and a grand daughter has it now. i don't know how much she uses it, but never heard any complaints.

The local Singer dealer will repair them also. I wanted a Singer machine at the time and this was all I could afford. The local Singer dealer didn't have a machine for $150. The serger attachment does a pretty good job also. It has come in handy several times.
Sorry my little cheap machine isn't good enough for some of you, but I am happy with it. It does everything I need. |

I bought the $199.00 model about 4 years ago, and it was about the best money I've ever spent. I love that machine, even though since then I've bought a small baby-lock embroidery machine, a BIG Janome embroidery machine, and the Baby Lock Evolution serger. But that Singer - what a work horse. It is totally gear driven - no electronics at all, and it has a small throat so it isn't good for actual quilting - but I love it for piecing, ruffling, etc.

My DH and I both had relatively inexpensive Brother machines we bought from WalMart, paid less than $100, and they lasted about 3 years of very regular quilt sewing. We bought one for our grandaughter, too, and she is still using it. I finally bought another Brother, little more money, about $160, then passed that one on to DH, and I bought another Brother for $195 at WalMart, with about 80 special stitches and letters. You can get sturdy, inexpensive machines that will last. You can also buy a vintage machine in good condition that will last probably longer than the newer models. It's personal taste, and has a lot to do with your budget.

Those ads have been running for decades. They're just a come-on for not-very-good-quality machines. This is probably one of the worst ways to go looking for a sewing machine. Buying off the shelf at Walmart is better, especially considering that low-end Singer machines have a very bad rep while low-end Brother machines (the kind sold at Walmart) have a pretty good rep.

I now have a Singer 301, which also cost me about $125 total with parts, etc., that I use for piecing. Those Brother machines are really quite reliable. My DH sewed all kinds of stuff on his, and eventually had to have it repaired at the shop. But mine have never been to the shop, and are little champs!! |
