So I've been bitten by the bug of wanting to own a vintage Singer (y'all convinced me on my other thread that I needed one :)). My husband found a model 201 that's just your run of the mill machine. I'm pretty sure it's missing accessories and such but it runs great so that's a good starting point. It doesn't come with a stand or cabinet though. The price was right so my husband bought it (though I probably would have asked for him to let us shop around more). I really would like a cabinet to put it in but a google search has not brought up many hits. There is a listing on Craigslist local to me that is for a cabinet only which used to hold a 600E. I haven't tried to contact the man selling it but I don't know if he'd be able to answer my question of will a 201 fit in that cabinet. I don't have my machine yet so I can't measure it. Off hand do any of you vintage machine experts know?

Here's a couple pictures;

I am a novice vintage machine collector. I have a 201, so I went upstairs to do some measurements.

My cabinet is 26 X 30" when closed.
The hole for the machine to sit into is 7 X 17 3/4".
The depth where the machine fits inside is 7".
The extra piece in front that you pull up to place the machine inside is 4" wide.

I hope this helps.

Rachel, you are SO going to love that old Singer! :) I can't answer your cabinet question...but looks like Jan has come to the rescue!

Keep in mind that even if the cabinet isn't an exact fit, if your qubby is handy with that kind of stuff he may be able to alter it to fit. :)

what you need to know is the distance between the hinges on
back of the cabinet & the back of the machine. the hole for
the machine may be the right size, but if the hinges are the wrong distance, you have to do new holes in cabinet.

I PM'd you back, but you might not have seen it.

From the outside of the hinge brace it is 10".
The inside of the hinge brace is 9 3/8".

Thank you so much Jan for all your help! I went back last night to the Craigslist listing to email about the cabinet but the person set the listing up to only be contacted by phone, no email. So I'll have to wait until later today to call.

Thanks again everyone!

The measurements were the hinge that directly attached to the machine.

I didn't know about the ISMACS site. Will have to check that one out. Just joined NeedleBar last week but haven't had a chance to check that one out.

There is another site where you can ask questions and they are ususally quite quick in responding. That site http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vintagesingers/
There is a lot of info in their files, but as I said they are quick in responding. You do have to join though.

Apparently you aren't getting my PM's as I had posted one this morning which I just copied here. I don't know why?

I got your PM last night with the hinge measurements, but didn't get anything this morning.

I think I'll join that group you just posted and see if anyone knows about the fit of these two machines in one cabinet. Thanks again Jan!

I measured hinge area on 201--it is 9 5/8". most Singer cabinets have that hinge measurement. yours is so close that it must be the same. I am member of Vintage Singers, they are very knowledgeable group & sharing. check thrift stores for cabinets. $25-$55 good price. wish you lived near me, I have quite a few nice ones. I don't recall a Singer cabinet with
that end opening, but I usually just deal in pre-1958s.
