I have a friend who lent me here Singer XL5000 as she was having trouble learning how to use it and I told her I would help. Well, now I need some help!

Does anyone out there have one - are you happy with it? I have had a lot of issues with it being very fussy.

I have two questions that I could really use some help with.

1. Is there any way to drop the feed dogs for free motion quilting?

2. When using the embroidery section, do you have issues with the design moving out of synch? I have had so very few that have come out correctly, I am loosing faith in doing anything on something more than scrap fabric. :cry:

Looks like in ads they can drop feed but not sure how to do it. Do you have a manual? Usually they cover troubleshooting issues like the design being off too.

Hi, sorry don´t have a singer but do have a brother. The drop feed latch is usually at the back of the machine, or it might be tucked underneath at the back, have a good look around it its just like a little switch.

About the embroidery, not quite sure how yours works but it could just be out of synche a wee bit. On my screen when I embroider there is a icon that looks like a page. When you press it you get into the setting on the machine, if you can on your one, go to the Embroidery section and you should be able to sort it from there.

No Book, look up on the web for a manual,just type in Singer (Model No.) Manual. If you don´t have luck there try Ebay or one of the shops that sell Singer machines.

my drop feed is down by the bobbin.....underneath an odd place and its a slide thingy :D this is A newer kenmore

make sure your hoop is screwed in tightly and all the way in, it doesn't take much to mess up the design if the hoops isn't tight, also have you moved or resized the design? when I was learning to move the design I didn't realize that it was in layers and I only moved one layer at a time enstead of the whole thing at once and of course I didn't get the layers lined back up right.

On some machines, the feed dog control dial/switch is underneath or in back of the freearm. I had a heck of a time finding the control on my machine.

Thank you everyone for your input and advice. I found the feed dog switch - I had used it to switch over to embroidery, but didn't realize that was what I was doing :mrgreen: !

Also, I think that my stabilizer was too heavy duty and my hoop probably was not tight enough. I didn't realize that the tightness of the hoop could make a difference. I did however hear the needle struggling a bit with the stabilizer.

Off to try it again tonight - with a lighter weight stabilizer and a tighter hoop!

I'm thinking of buying a used Singer 5000xl. Trying to do some research on it. It also comes with a generation software. What is your thoughts on this? They are not sure how old it is. Any comments on the sewing machine would be very helpful.
