I've always used double-fold bindings. I have to make ten table toppers and wondered if I can use single-fold binding on them. They don't seen to get handled as much as regular quilts so I'm guessing single-fold would last. What are your thoughts on this? (I'm trying to save fabric but wouldn't want to compromise the finished projects.) Thank so much for all your help.

if i were selling them or giving them as gifts i would do a double fold if they were for me i'd do a single fold.

I think I would go ahead and do a double, the binding is always the first thing to wear.

I noticed my grandmother's quilts that have been used for years have single fold binding. The binding looks fine, no more wear then the rest of the quilts.

If you are going to use single fold, then on the bias would be stronger than on the straight of grain, but then I don't think that would be a very economic option, fabric wise. For a half inch single fold binding, you are going to need a minimum of 1.5 inch strips ( and that would be tight, because of the depth of the batting). For a double fold, minimum 2.5 inch strips - do you really need to save an inch each time?

Thanks for your answers-I thought double fold would be better. I'm not used to hubby being unemployed and me only working one day per week. I guess saving an inch of fabric was stretching the attempt to be frugal a little too far.

I only cut my double fold 2 1/4, I find I still have plenty of fabric when folding it to the other side, whether I am hand stitiching it or using the machine

I only cut 2" strips for binding. Seriously, isn't it much much easier to just fold it and stitch rather than tucking the open edge in as you sew? And the width of the binding is more consistent, anyhow. I only use a single fold when I am doing tight curves.

I agree with Cathe. I do double fold binding whenever I can. I cut my strips 2 1/4" or 2 3/8", depending on the batting I'm using.

I agree with Lacelady that 2 1/2" is the best size for binding. Is your binding print or solid? PM me with a description and maybe I can send you enough of some fabric to finish it.
