size of basic placemats

I have a repeat print fabric that I want to use for placemats for a gift. The repeat is every 12" but I'm afraid if I cut it at 12" it will be a little small by the time I'm finished hemming it all around. I could cut them larger but then they won't match each other in design. What would you do if it were your fabric?

You could always add a border? Might look good.

Now why didn't I think of that? Dina your great. It has a few different colors I could use too. But do you think it would be too small if I didn't use a border?

Depends on your plate size!
And what your personal preferences are for placemat sizes.

Placemats typically come in the standard dimensions of 12 to 14 inches by 16 inches to 20 inches ... 12 x 12 inches might be too small. The idea of adding a border to make it the size you want would work.

You might also add pinwheels, friendship stars, checkerboards, et. to the sides rather than just the plain border... Good luck with it and PLEASE show us your finished placemats!

I just made a bunch and cut my batting in sizes that I could get the most out of it by. I did 11x16. worked fine.

Instead of a border all the way around you could add a border, then blocks along one side - that would showcase your print nicely.

I like my placemats no less than 16 x 14, and usually go up to 18 wide by 14 high. I usually do have to do one or more borders to get the size I want with the designs I choose.

I would just add a border to get it the size I need.
