Is there an "official" size for a lap quilt? I have made several and just made them any size that seemed right, but I wonder if there is an specific size.

I always just thought that anything smaller than a twin. that isn't going to be used as a wall hanging, was a lap quilt.

Maybe it depends on the size of the lap?

The one I'm working on now is 50x60. Last time I was at Wal-mart I checked out the bedding dept. All the throws they have were that size. So thats what I went by.

I think it's up to you, and can depend on size of quilt blocks. My current WIP is 52 square.

For the one I'm using now, the size was where I ran out of material. I've added a border, binding, and calling it done. No one will know I really wanted it bigger.

I used my own lap for a test, and if my derriere will be covered, the recipient's will be too.

Thanks, you girls are great. Love the humor. So I guess it really doesn't matter.

It only matters if you are making it for a person in a wheelchair. My husbands has to longer than most because of his long legs, but I have to tuck it tight to his little behind! lol lol

Some for wheelchairs have to be shorter.
Hugs,
Sharon

My husband and 2 sons are 6'4" and 6'5", so when I make a lap quilt they want it long enough to cover from their shoulder to their size 13 feet!! I tend to make LONG lap quilts

hey,

i have those guys too. only one of each. are you sure they aren't the same ones? mine bundle up with twin sized quilts and call them 'throws'.

This website has the measurements for all quilts, but I don't think it's written in stone that a quilt has to be those exact measurements.

As you can see, I think it depends on what you decide to do with it. I found other sites and the sizes all over the place. There is definitely nothing cut in stone, it is all of to you.

That's my gauge too - or if I run out of steam and I just want to be done.

I'm with the "depends on the size of the lap" bunch. I made one last year for a tall nephew who was getting married and made it long enough to cover him and wide enough to snuggle with his new bride!
