I want to create a finished block that is 12". What size squares do I need to start with? Most of the tutorials tell you how to cut and rearrange, but not sizes to start with to get the finished size you want.

try 4 1/4 or 4 1/2 inches

I just made one and use 5" squares, squaring up a couple of times and got them down to a perfect 12 1/2!

Thanks I will give that a try. I didn't think 4 1/4 would work.

I might if I cut, sewed and pressed perfectly. I like the fudge factor.

4 1/2 would work for a traditional nine patch, but you are cutting that block up so 5" will give you the extra seam allowances :D:D:D

If you are really accurate on cutting and seam allowance, 5" squares should give you a 13.5" block in D9P.

cool

If I am understanding this, you sew up the original 9 patch using 5 inch squares to make the big square which is then cut up? Right? I have a very nice fat quarter stack? that I bought on sale would work for this, will just add one plain color to it. Thanks.
