Sleeve for wall hanging?
I made a wall hanging and looked on line for directions for making a sleeve for the back. They all say to make the sleeve 9"long and fold in half. Mine is 38"wide by 39" long. This seems quite big for a small wall hanging . Has anyone made them this size or made smaller for their wall hanging?

I'm assuming your wall hanging is 38 x 39". I would think the size of the sleeve depends on what you are using to hang the wall hanging. You could make one long sleeve or a couple small ones. It depends on how the wall hanging will hang.

I make mine the width of the quilt and about 6 - 8 inches wide. It will be folded in half and seam allowances taken off that. This is usually wide enough for the rod I use

If you are going to hang it, then decided on the width of the rod. I would consider 3" to be fine so cut your 7" wide (using a 1/2" seam allowance) and cut it just a 1/2" less on both sides. Then I do a double turn over and stitch the sides, press in half and attach it onto the top before doing the binding. I sew the binding to the back so when I attach the binding. the sleeve is secure and the raw edge will be hidden in the binding.

A 9 inch wide sleeve is standard for quilts to hang at shows. What are you planning to hang the wall hanging with? If it is a dowel or rod, take a piece of string and measure the circumfrance. Add your seam allowance plus about an inch and that should be a good size. You might look into the cute little curtain rings that have little teeth. They allow you to attach the teeth to the wallhanging edge and then run a rod through the rings. You can then mount the rod brackets and hang.

I'm working on a wall-hanging that will finish at 23 x 37 inches. The instructions say to cut a strip 5 and 1/4 inches for the hanging sleeve. Then fold and press in half. Match all raw edges at the top. It is then covered by the binding.
Leaving out the ends, of course:) |
