OUCH! I hope it is feeling a little better and starting to heal!

Kim Bohannon 01-20-2012 05:29 PM

that is a nasty cut! am not surprised it is still throbbing, especially with where it is... cuts that go in at an angel do tend to hurt long, don't know why... and if you keep using it, that deosn't help, but it should heal up on its own, especially with the care you are giving it... just take it easy for a while

Ok, Look no further if you're squeamish! I did the exact same thing last May. Luckily for me a doctor lives next door. He came over and when he unwrapped the paper towels from it, I fainted. I woke up on the kitchen floor. A wound nurse lives on the other side. She taught me how to take care of it and it healed fine. It feels different on the end but there's nothing I can do about that. But this is what I did to protect it until it healed. I took an empty paper towel core and cut it to fit the end of my finger. I wrapped that with gauze and tape. It kept me from knocking or hitting it. Ok, now for the pictures. Close your eyes and pass them by if you're squeamish.

just reading this makes me feel sick to the stomach , then the picture! well it must be painful. They make special gloves
Fones and porter. they do help. hope it doesn't take to long to heal.

scjoan 01-20-2012 06:19 PM

I did this about a year and a half ago. Cut about 1/2 inch long and a into my finger about a eighth of an inch. Still bothers me at times. It's healed, but I have an occasional throb and really watch the rotary cutter now. Never had an infection, never seen the doctor.

SWEETPEACHES 01-20-2012 06:21 PM

I went right out and bought the plastic shield that goes along the side of the 24" ruler.

KimS 01-20-2012 07:04 PM

I did the very same thing Wednesday and it was the same finger. When I first did it I got really sick to my stomach and by the time I got to the bathroom blood was running down my hand. Put some pressure on it, Neosporin and 6 bandaids before it would quit bleeding. After I got the bleeding stopped then I wondered if I'd gotten blood on my fabric. Thankfully there wasn't any. Whew!! I'm also cleaning mine with Peroxide and keeping the Neosporin on it. I'm sure it could have used a couple of stitches but my insurance doesn't pay much and didn't want to put out the money. I know what you mean about hitting it on everything possible. It's going to be sore for several days and as long as we keep it clean we'll be ok. :)

jollyquilting 01-20-2012 07:05 PM

I am so sorry for the problem. They make a klutz glove to use, I have one somewhere but forget where I put it. Maybe I should start using it.

DawnFurlong 01-20-2012 07:07 PM

Oh my Sweetpeaches!!! I do believe you took more off your finger than I took off mine. Those rotary cutters - definitely can cause a lot of damage. Haven't decided on the gypsy things or the Rule Steady. But going to get something.

It was like some type of miracle healing took place overnight, because today was much better than yesterday. Still going to be babying it for awhile, keeping it clean and in a bandaid. Jabbed myself with my seam ripper though and drew blood. I decided it might not be a bad idea to re-do my tetanus shot at my doctor's appointment in March.

SWEETPEACHES 01-20-2012 07:21 PM

I don't think you're supposed to use peroxide on these cuts. It's ok the first or second day, but after that I'm pretty sure the wound care nurse told me not to. There was a reason too. I just can't remember what it was. If you get a chance, ask a wound care nurse.. not a doctor, how to treat it.

QuiltingGrannie 01-20-2012 07:32 PM

Ouch! I feel the pain. I sliced my index finger last Sunday. All was going fine and then before I knew it, using my small 1" x 6" ruler was cutting a small piece of fabric, and sliced my finger. Took three paper towels before the bleeding slowed up enough for me to decide if I needed stitches. Thought about it. Then..... cleaned it while I was getting it to stop bleeding, Cleaned it with water and rubbing alcohol, placed the skin flap back onto the area it belonged and applied super glue to the edge line. Waited for the glue to dry, and put a large band aid on it. 5 days later the skin is reattached, and healing well. Pain is only an occasional throb. I love my super glue!

DawnFurlong 01-20-2012 07:57 PM

Sweetpeaches - someone else had posted earlier about not using peroxide. She said that she was told this at the ER I believe (or an urgent care center - my memory is often faulty!). The reasoning was that it kills both the bad and the good bacteria. Funny, all my life I have heard about how cuts and such should be cleaned with peroxide! Maybe it isn't a bad idea at first, but should not be continued after the initial clean. Better yet - I would sure rather avoid cutting myself!

KimS - I am a few days ahead of you with the healing. I hope yours gets better quickly as well. I had much less pain/discomfort with mine today. I have gotten used to keeping it out of the way, but did still manage to bump it a couple of times today. Wasn't near as bad as it was even yesterday, thankfully. Didn't kick off the throbbing. Good signs I think.

piepatch 01-21-2012 05:49 AM

I did the same thing a few months ago. Same finger, and I treated it the same way you did.....peroxide, neosporin, and bandage. I kept repeating that, and it healed well and fast. I was using my cutter in low light because I was in a hurry to make one last cut, but never again! I won't let myself get in a hurry now, and I make sure I have good lighting.

marymay 01-21-2012 05:52 AM

My best quilting buddie just did this last SAT. Text me ans ask when do you know you need stitches.WOW she cut her whole tip of figured off.The problem is I bought her a pair of gloves for Christmas .Did she wear them. NO.I feel your pain.I did this a year ago and had to have 6 stitches.I bought my gloves.Run don't walk!!!!! to Jo Anns and buy a pair.So worth the money. Every quilter need to get a pair.

junegerbracht 01-21-2012 07:06 AM

This brings up memories. I sliced a chunk off the same finger last summer. I was using a shape cutter ruler and just slicing away strips - put my finger in the wrong place. It stopped bleeding when I put a tight bandage on it which stopped the bleeding. The next morning it was throbbing - took bandage off and it started spurting blood. Had to go to urgent care where doctor put something on it which stopped the bleeding - took quite a while to heal. Finger is a little mishapened and site is tender to the touch. I did buy a glove and an accuquilt. Hope I have learned my lesson to pay more attention. Happy healing and don't beat yourself up - it was an accident.

kathyquilter34 01-21-2012 07:07 AM

Get a glove like Fons and Porter uses..a rotary cutter will not cut through it..may keep you from doing it again..I cut the end of my index finger off..got caught in a stormdoor..the Dr. just laid the flap back up and bandaged it..I was only 8yrs.old..still have a scar..they would have to soak in in cool water to get the dressing off..if you keep your hand elevated above you heart..it helps with the throbbing..mine took 2 months to reattach..

countrycousin 01-21-2012 07:11 AM

I once cut my finger with a pair of scissors and had to have stitches.

Ok, so this happened on Friday night. I was using the pinking rotary cutter and happily cutting - when it happened. Didn't even feel it (though I have felt it plenty since!). Question - anyone out there having had this experience - does this kind of thing heal on it's own? About how long does it take? No sign of infection. But the tip of my finger - doesn't take much for it to start throbbing. Starting to wonder if I should go to the doctor. And yet - thinking what can they do at this point - and again - no sign of infection.

It's the right side top of my left index finger. The flap of skin was almost severed (maybe 1/2 inch long by a about 1/4 inch wide, several layers of skin). It was still attached in the center. While I considered going to the Urgent Care center, I decided against it because it wasn't so much that the cut was deep. There didn't seem to be anything to stitch.

I held pressure on it until it stopped bleeding (took a bit). Poured hydrogen peroxide on it (boy did that sting). Then covered it in neosporin and wrapped well in gauze and taped. I kept it like this through Saturday (cleaned it a couple of times, changed the gauze). On Sunday I decided it probably needed to dry some so it could start healing.

The bottom of the flap of skin looks like it has reattached. I didn't think that is possible - not sure if that is what happened. But it is sealed up around the bottom. The top oozes a little here and there. A blood clot was under the top edge. I actually cut that little bit off this morning (cleaned the clipper well, this part was kind of sticking up on my finger). Put neosporin on it again this morning since I cut that little bit off. I am a secretary - but find that I can't type in an extended fashion (the constant tat-tat-tat on the keyboard ends up hurting, but pecking away for small bits seems ok). Kind of wondering how long it will take to heal. I have had somewhat deep cuts before (sliced finger on can or with knife) - but I don't remember it still hurting a week later. Again, doesn't hurt constantly - but doesn't take much to set off the throbbing.

You can bet I pay closer attention to where my fingers are at on my ruler now!!! Have read where people recommend a little gripper thing. Might just add that to my arsenal. This is one experience I don't want to repeat! Kind of wondering if the side of my finger will be misshapen. Oh - and I didn't realize how much one bumps their finger on things in the course of a day. A lot!!!

sorry about your finger, my doctors says after you clean a injury the first time with hydrogen peroxide , don't use it again on new tissue that's healing, the hydrogen peroxide will damage the new tissue.. call your addvise nurse at your doctors office about this..

PumpkinSundae 01-21-2012 08:45 AM

I did the same thing the second week of quilting (I havent' been quilting that long). Boy did I learn a lesson that day. It doesnt sound quite as deep as yours but it was deep and my hand shook for a little while (shock?). I thought that after I wash it and wrap it as long as it stops bleeding it should be okay. If it was deeper I guess I would have had to go to the doctor. Anyway, it healed with a tiny scar that you really can't see and doesn't bother me at all. I always think of that when I get out the rotary cutter. Hope you are back to quilting soon.

DonnaB 01-21-2012 08:56 AM

Ouch! So Sorry you cut your finger. Gotta be careful

urgodschild2 01-21-2012 09:20 AM

ok you have all warned me. I am going to the road to CA show today and will look for some safety tools for cutting. I don't want to cut myself with my rotary cutter. OUCH.

T. 01-21-2012 09:29 AM

Sorry you had the accident, Dawnfurlong. I hope you'll get better real soon.
Thanks BellaBoo for the links too. I will use the 40% coupon to get the those suction cups things at Joann's next chance I get to go there.

Thanks for the links BellaBoo. That Rule Steady looks really nice. Contemplating which safety device I want to employ. Really don't want to do this again.

Eliebelle 01-21-2012 09:40 AM

Many years ago, I sliced the top of my pinky with a mandolin. Bled like crazy, but eventually stopped. My sister, the nurse, said that fingers are funny things and to expect it to hurt even after it healed. GOOD LUCK!!! You did all the right things to keep infection away.

BellaBoo 01-21-2012 09:53 AM

I was given a mandolin as a gift. I was always leery of it even using the safety tool. I found I could buy most foods I used for it already sliced. I'd rather pay a few cents more then use the mandolin. It's an accident waiting to happen for me.

Pat G 01-21-2012 09:58 AM

Oh my, yes, I did the exact same thing a few yrs. ago. My cut was so deep it hit a nerve & was numb for a long time. It also bled for 3 days even with pressure. I sure learned to be more careful when rotary cutting.

I watch Fons & Porter use that floppy glove for safety but I decided "what a pain" so I've learned to be a lot more careful. Sometimes lessons hurt. LOL

mcdor 01-21-2012 10:14 AM

Hi, I did the same to my left index finger. Now I wear the Klutz glove from Fons and Porter when rotary cutting. I feel more confident and have never sliced a finger again.

kydeb 01-21-2012 10:48 AM

I almost cut off the tip of my finger (not with a rotary cutter though). It took a while to get better and I have no feeling in the tip of that finger. I didn't go to the doctor - just pushed it back down and stuck a bandage on it. It bled enough to wash out any germs :-) Hope yours gets better quickly!!

Cool AZ quilter 01-21-2012 10:53 AM

There are gloves available that the rotary cutter won't go through. They are a little expensive. However, they are a lot cheaper than a visit to the ER if you slit your hand or arm with the rotary cutter. You cann usually purchase these where quilting supplies are sold and at one or two of the online sites.

CLMQuilter 01-21-2012 10:58 AM

I did that to my finger years ago but did not need stitches but I do have nerve damage on the finger. Hope your heals well and with do damage.

Sorry to hear about your accident-something we all dread.
I may be late, but welcome to the Board. Hope your finger gets better soon.

katcox 01-21-2012 12:22 PM

Sound to me like your doing the right thing by giving it some air neosporen is good but air is still better, at least with my skin. I don't like it to be so moist.

Sew Freak 01-21-2012 12:24 PM

Years ago I purchased a 6x24" ruler and it had a plastic piece glued onto it as the protection for fingers. Worked great until it got unglued. (I just need to reglue it) I haven't seen one since but I did see at JAs they had just the plastic protection piece for sale. I don't know how much but you may want to check it out. Good Luck and sorry!!!

caspharm 01-21-2012 01:09 PM

I had done that to my thumb and had to go get stitches - it wouldn't stop bleeding, but it took a long time for the sensitivity to leave. There are lots of nerves and vessels in your fingers.

collady 01-21-2012 02:49 PM

I took the side off a finger on Thanksgiving day 13 years ago. Hubby grabbed the piece and put it in a cup of salt water and rushed me and finger to hospital. Doctor was going to sew it back on until the nurse looked in the cup, got sick, and threw it onto the floor. They then just bandaged the finger, after packing it in honey! It hurt like you know what, but it healed and it looks almost normal. It did hurt for a couple of weeks!

shrabar 01-21-2012 02:49 PM

I cut the tip off of my index finger about 1/8 off the Dr. ask where is the rest of your finger lol on the cutting table silly .. it does take a long time when it throbs raise your hand. if you look very close at my finger you could see it is a little smaller. I am fully healed.

TymeToShine 01-21-2012 08:14 PM

Hi Dawn,
I have not sliced my finger with a rotary cutter BUT I did smash and pull the tip off when I was helping a friend move a sewing table that was upside down and the folded end of the table fell open and caught my finger. It took part of the bone off as well as all the skin and smashed the meat inside. it was a mess and I went to the ER with visions of them amputating the finger to the joint. They told me peroxide was a no no. I learned that God has really made us in a way that healing is quite a miracle. They gave me several choices of how to treat it. finishing teh amputation, doing a skin graft, or letting it heal on its own. I chose the last one. They told me it would take about 4 months for the skin to grow back over the mashed meat and it did. I was amazed! It took another year for most of the nerves to grow back. My finger is shorter, but even the fingerprints grew back! I had to change the bandage several times each day and had to do
a "whirlpool treatment" (I made my own using one of those water picks!) The thing that really helped with the healing and "comfort" ---and yes it hurt more than anything I have ever had in my life --- was the special bandage they recommended. We gopt it at a pharmacy. It was a sterile gauze pad that is soaked in something that makes it kind of feel like vaseline. It did not stick to the wound so it made it easier to change the bandage - you might want to see if you can find those. Of course I had lots of layers over that gauze pad to protect my finger from bumps. Used more regular gauze and then held it on with that knitted tubing for fingers they sell at the pharmacy. And they made me a padded metal thing to cover the whole thing. I did get antibiotics and a tetanus shot too. They told me to avoid neosporin for the long term because it tends to gum up on the wound and then you have to get it off. Hope some of this helps you.

Froggiey 01-21-2012 09:33 PM

Also cut my finger and found the piece on the cutting mat later that night. Tried to be very careful. I am a hairdresser and everything I did hurt, but nothing like permanent wave solution.

BarbaraSue 01-22-2012 09:07 AM

It was probably good that the top blistered area was snipped off. The edges of the wound will heal faster than that of the inside on many occassions. Some things don't get stitched together the way they used to because the healing needs to come from the inside to the outside to fully heal and reattatch.
Keep it clean and dry--from water showering, or doing dishes, and keep it covered most of the time when it could get caught in clothes, or whatever and pulled it back apart. You will know when the healing is such that that happening won't be an issue. Then you can leave bandages off like ever night, then more and more open. It will be sensitive for quite some time, and may always be more sensitive than it was before the wound. It depends on how close to the nerve the cut was, and other things.
Other ideas, think about you have used in the past to help your body heal. Use that as your guide to get this healed. We all are different, so one ointment may help you that won't help the next and visa versa. Try something for 2 days, then if that doesn't work, try the next thing on your list. If in 4 days you have little luck gettng it healed, have it looked at. You could have an infection in it that is keeping it from healing. Or if the pain gets too severe, or you have draingage that you didn't have before, don't hesitate to go to the DR.
Good Luck. I praying you will heal quilckly and completely.

dannel 01-23-2012 06:28 PM

I did the same finger but went through the fingernail. Had 6 stitches and boy did it throb for a while. I have been very careful ever since.

lparker 01-24-2012 04:04 AM

I did the exact same thing about 6 years ago but took off half of the side of my finger along with the nail and nail bed. Hubby rushed me to the hospital and they had to re-attach. Took a long time to heal though, still have little feeling in the tip of my finger but now use meat cutters gloves when cutting.
