Slight running of color. Help!
I just completed a quilt with a lot of white in it (kona snow). The quilting is white. The other color are strong pinks and some green. I washed it in a big washer in cold water at the laundromat with colour catchers. The color catchers came out slightly pink. All the fabric was pre- washed.
It looked just fine when I took it out and dried it, but now, in the day light, I can see that the white isn't quite white anymore. I am frustrated and worried. This is was a quilt I was commissioned to do by my daughter in law for her niece. I don't know what to do. Should I try re-washing it? If so, with what? I don't know if she will even notice, but I can see it clearly now and I feel like I will be dishonest if I don't point it out. Any thoughts anyone???? |
I would re-wash it with Synthrapol and ***hot water*** in a machine that uses a lot of water. Sometimes it takes more than one washing, but it should eventually remove the pink tinge. Actually, if you had done this with the first washing, chances are good there would not have been a pink tinge. Synthrapol suspends loose dye particles in the water so they do not settle into fabric, but it requires hot water to work.

If it is so faint you don't think someone else would notice why would you point it out, try to make them see it? That doesn't make sense to me. It could just be you are seeing faint pink reflecting from the pinks. I would set it aside for a couple days and then look at it again, outside if possible ( sometimes our indoor lighting can cause a color cast that really isn't there. If it is still there and apparent the synthropol wash should take care of it. If you really don't want to wash it in hot water ( which is required for synthropol) then try doing it again with more color catchers

Which is why I (now) soak new fabrics in HOT water for several hours - and then wash them in cool/warm water before cutting them.
(Also - soak like colors together - in case one of them has bad manners - it won't matter - much) |

I hope you didn't use some knock off or cheaper brand of color catcher. I have never had a problem before. Hope you find something to fix this quilt.

My 1st quilt thta ran in the washer was for my mother. Didn't catch the red on the white till after I took it out of the dryer. I thought it was a goner but someone here told me to just throw it into the wash again with another color catcher. And to my surprise the red came out just fine. Now I check all over the quilt before I throw it into the dryer just to save myself the frustration. Those color catchers are great.

You could try OxyClean White Revive. It doesn't affect colors. I use it because of my well water makes things dingy. It whitens things up.

I'm worried about putting it in hot water so I will try white revive if I can find it tomorrow plus more color catchers. Thanks all. Wish me luck!
