Slippy rulers
Do you stick anthing on the back of your rulers to stop them slipping?
I have used two things: Invisigrip-clear, like contact but a bit grippier; deck tape for skate boards! My long arm dealer told me about the deck tape. It comes in clear or black (I think). It feels like a plastic sand paper and is sticky on one side. I went to a skateboard shop and they sold me half a deck's worth for about $3! I have most of it left as I only use dime size pieces. I would use both again. I seem to remember someone putting rubber cement on the bottom...? some days I NEED it.and someday I don't!

Nexcare tape works great. You can see through it. I buy mine at Walgreens.
I've used those little round sandpaper dots that are available in the notions section of fabric stores.
I use Nexcare clear tape also. You might be able to find something similar in the UK...
it's used for bandages. |
Non-skid shelving. small strip.
Te only product that I've found that really works is Grip Strips
http://www.guidelines4quilting.com/GripStrips.html i have them on all my rulers |
I am glad to hear a good review about the Grip Strips. I have been wanting to try them so now I probably will give them a go. I have been using the Invisigrip for a number of years but it seems to be getting slippery now.
I started buying Creative Grids rulers -
I also use the grip strips and use them on all my rulers.
Thank you for all the great ideas!
I have 4 clear sticky dots on the corner of my rulers. Works great. I've also used gripper clamps holding my rulers down to the table but that can get a bit tedious but sometimes worth the effort.
I use a Quilters Slidelock. Won't use anything else. Best tool I have found to stop ruler slippage once an for all and it's almost impossible to have a rotary accident if using one.
I am with 117becca, Creative Grid rulers are great, I too, started buying them
I too love the Creative Grid rulers but have a few that are"specialty" rulers that are very slick. I have tried the sandpaper dots, clear round stickons and invisagrip. All work OK for me but each has it downsides as far as I am concerned. I ran across this tip at MQX by a longarmer - I now use old fashion rubber cement on the back of those slippery rulers. It is flat, see through, easily removed when icky and cheap.
I do! Invisigrip which is clear. BUT any new rulers I buy are Creative Grids...wish they'd been around about 10 years sooner. You DO have to pay closer attention to the markings on the CG rulers, but there's that lovely transparent removable tape at Staples to use if you're making multiple cuts of the same size.

I've become a creative grids girl myself. Worth every penny!

Put a wide rubber band around the ruler or template! There is one on my 60 degree pyramid ruler right now and it's dandy. Saw it on you tube. I save the bands that hold broccoli, asparagus, etc.
I use a vinyl friction tape that can be removed to clean my fingerprints off my rulers
I'm with sassysews2: I do that so often I'm reticent to purchase anything!
For my rulers I have one sheet of very fine grit sand paper that I cut off a 1/4 x 1/2" piece. One dot of Elmer's glue has held these dots for years on the back of my rulers. Couldn't be less expensive nor more useful. Love it. At least this one time I remember WHY I have sandpaper in the sewing room. :) |
Yes that is what I also use. I have also cut very very tiny slips of sandpaper and glued them to my rulers. Just be sure to keep the ruler upside down until it dries. Just used Elmer's school glue.
I have used Invisigrip but it really is the vinyl you find in the Home Dec dept.
I just use rubber cement. It's clear, it's cheap, it's easy, and when I want to just roll your finger across it pressing hard and you can roll it off. Get it at any school supply area (Wal Mart, Target, etc

I use TrueGrips--non-slip adhesive rings. Made by the The Grace Company and I bought at local sewing machine shop.
I have two sizes of the Slidelock and those are my favorite besides using True Grips on bottom of rulers.

What a great idea! I save those rubber bands all the time but hardly ever put them to use. Guess they will go out in the studio now. Thanks for that tip but I do wonder how you keep from cutting the bands when using a rotary cutter with the ruler? |
I received a pack of the Tru-Grips when I bought a template set. They work pretty well. I also use the Creative Grid rulers.
I also bought some skateboard tape, but found that they scratch my other rulers and templates when they rub against them. |
I use sandpaper dots that I make using a sheet of sandpaper that is sticky on one side and a paper hole punch.

http://www.guidelines4quilting.com/GripStrips.html i have them on all my rulers I so agree with you on this. The Grip Strips are the greatest invention even in my book. Well worth the money I spent and they work better than the sandpaper disks and "tub grippers" I had been using. |
I have used clear nail polish and table salt. You will to renew from time-to-time, but it does work.
I stray the back lightly with basting spray from the can and let it dry you can always take it off with fingernail polish remover I also do that to any template I am using it works great
I have these, didn't like them at all, my fabric kept twisting underneath them. I use some clear flat grippers I got at the quilt store, but will give the Nexcare a try. I also have some creative grid rulers that don't slip.
Grip strips is the only thing I use now. I had tried everything else and nothing ever seemed to work. They are great I use them on all my rulers, wouldn't be without them
