I'm new at quilting and cutting and the rotary cutter. I measured with the regular type rules , made paper templates and still couldn't get things to come out right. Then I saw these rulers/cutters at the LQS and bought the small one; read the instructions and practiced with it and followed the directions. I felt like I had struck gold! They are the best thing I have found and have since bought every size. I can't believe none of the "experienced quilters" I know told me nothing about them and when I asked them about the June Tailor cutters, most of them acted like I was from Mars. Their loss and my gain!!! You can cut strips in no time. I also have a Go-Cutter but not all of their dies which can get expensive.

here is a you tube vido on how to use it. hope this link works

I so want one of these for Christmas !!

I have used the 12" and 18" ones for years. Just recently while browsing the JoAnn's web site I saw that a new 24" one has hit the market. I ordered it right away. I know a lot of quilters who look down their noses at these wonders but I wouldn't trade mine for anything. I have to lean on any ruler to prevent slippage at the far end of the cut and do so with this one.
What kind of clamp was it mentioned above? I'm interested. |

I had one for a while, but what really sold me on using it was when I took a class with Eleanor Burns and when I asked her how they cut the fabric we had in our kits she said they used a slotted ruler and that really convinced me to make better use of it than I had been. |
I am just finishing up a quilt in which I used a slotted cutting board. For the most part I liked it, it will cut several strips at a time accureatly. However I occasionaly used another board to re-align the the straight edge again. It seems to go offf the slightest bit after several cuts. Otherwise I liked it. I seem to fall back to the two measuring rulers, creature of habit I guess.!

Ha Ha, I know how you feel. I too am relativly new to quilting. I have sewn many years off and on and did a lot of crafting of all sorts. Even taught a few classes for fun. I love gadgets and will try many new ones if I can afford them. Have fun!

I have the June Tailor Shape Cut Pro. Slots every 2 1/2". It was expensive but I LOVE it! I cut lots of 2 1/2" strips and this makes it so quick and easy.
|
I looked at one in Joanns today, it seemed flimsy, did it hold up good to use...I really wanted to convince myself to get it.
|
If you check June Tailor's you tube, she shows how to cut other shapes with the slotted rulers. well worth the few minutes it takes to watch.
|
I love mine. I use it all the time.
|
I will have to check this out as it is all new to me. Sounds interesting!
|
I saw the demo on her site.
Thats the reason I really wanted to get one, after actually seeing it today it just seemed flimsy. How long have you had yours and how much do you use it ? |
I've had mine several years and I use it on most of my quilts. I'm not a big producer but have enjoyed this gadget
|
True, they do feel flimsy, but I have not had any problem with mine. I even store it on it's edge, shoved under the cutting table and still no problem.
|
Is it a cutting mat or is it a square for cutting strips. I have one for cutting strips and I love it!
|
Mine is the June Tailor Shape Cut Pro, strip cutter. I love it.
|
convinced me I bought one, I used it and its seems to work well..

As some others have mentioned, fold the fabric in half only once and hold the template down HARD when you are cutting. As you are folding the fabric be sure to line up the selvage perfectly or you will get strange V-shaped strips... or if you fold it twice and it isn't perfect you'll end up with wavy strips.
Cutting is my least-favorite activity, so I was thrilled when I first found my strip template but it took a lot of getting used to in order to produce nice strips. Also be sure that your rotary blade is super sharp--if you don't cut through both layers completely it's a hassle to separate them later. I find that on slippery fabrics I have to re-align the template with each cut to be sure that I am not creating uneven cuts... it takes almost as much time as using a regular acrylic quilting ruler, but at least if I hold the template down hard enough the slit prevents me from cutting a curved line off to the right like I often do with the regular rulers. |
