Are you a slow quilter/sewer? Or a fast one?

I was up super duper late last nite working on the quilt, yet it seems like I didn't hardly get anything done! It's very discouraging. :(

This quilt is never going to get done. *sigh*

I tend to agonize over little details... rrrriiiiiiippppp and do it over (hopefully *right* the next time)!! So, I'd say I'm a slow quilter. Although, I've been getting them done faster these days... practice helps!

I think I am a slow cutter, slow sewer, and even slower quilter!!!!

I usually take my time. I sew and quilt in steps:
1st Day: Cut out all pattern pieces
2nd Day: Cut all fabric
3rd Day: Sew it all together

It seems easier for me to take these steps. I get a lot more done. I think anyway! :lol: :lol:

Don't worry how long it takes you, I know that cutting, preparation and the first few pieces going together takes forever until you have some bigger pieces. I know hand quilting seemed to take me forever, and I did quilt square by square so I was able to take the quilting with me. Both my mother, mother-in-law and then my husband all needed to be in the hospital for long periods and went to the clinic for frequent treatments so I quilted all the times when visiting or waiting. I know both mothers had surgery that lasted 8-12 hours so the quilting was a great time killer.

I start out slow with the planning and cutting, when it comes time to sew, I kick in to high gear until I get to the borders and then the QADD kicks in and everything slows to a crawl!!!(if not a complete stop)

Usually, extremely slooooooow!! But I did find out, when under pressure and a time limit, I can kick butt on speed LOL

I tell ya, that is me!!!!!
I hate to cut, I like to plan and buy fabric...but I hate to cut, just seems too tedious.
Then I sew like a mad woman, get the borders on and then come to a quick halt!!! QADD!!!!
My WIP are piling up! Arrgh!!!
I don't get much time to sew (would have more if I would stay off of here) but need to get more organized and have been trying to do that thanks to the inspiration of all the talented people here.

I am slow, slow, slooooooow, but I just tell myself that is keeping this hobby more affordable!

there are a few things i can throw together in a day or two, but i'm usually slower than molasses in january.

Think of your quilting this way - a 3 year old can paint a picture in under 30 seconds. Michaelangelo took a bit longer to do his, the results were obviously different. Both are considered painters... And I am here to tell you I drift more towards the 3 year olds talent. Whatever pace you have, enjoy the journey- there is no right or wrong :):):)

I love the buying fabric, hate the cutting, Sew way to fast! I would rather just hand quilt and I do that pretty fast too. I just want it done so I can show it off. Sometimes I am pretty slow with the plannin part.

I start out slowly and meticulously . . .then I get comfortable and go a little faster . . .then I get bored and go even faster . . . then I get to the borders and all of a sudden I think I'm speedracer or somethin' . . .

So I have to consciously slow down, because this is a hobby and something I do because I enjoy doing it as well as having the finished product to show off. I think I need to do a sign for above my desk (the scene of all quilting accomplishments and disasters) that reminds me to TAKE IT SLOW!

I am slow.... I like cutting.... I like sewing the blocks together but I hate putting on the border :roll: I also love to hand quilt but that never goes fast enough for me... I have too many WIP sitting around :lol:

I know what you mean. We have a different idea in mind of just what we can do.

Most things we do take us longer than we anticipate, hence, we think we're slow.

Not so. Our minds are accelerated, have their own pace, our bodies work at a realistic pace. It's all in our minds.

Seriously.

It's one of the reasons why work and chores are so unpleasant. We think we can bang out our work in no time at all and are really bummed out that it takes us three times as long to do than we anticipate.

And I'm speaking purely from experience there.

I found the faster I go, the behinder I get!!!!! So slower works better for me :mrgreen:

Gee, I hadn't even thought about quilting in those terms. I am just so thrilled when I get a chunk of time to work on any of my projects. It is fun and I don't think about speed but I do think about doing things "right" because I want to be satisfied with the finished project. Although, I have to admit when everything is cut and ready to sew I get real excited. Putting the pieces together and seeing the design unfold is exciting for me!That is probably when I'm the fastest......LOL

I'm very slooooow and get bored very quickly so I try to have at least WIP. One in the piecing stages, one being quilted on the machine and one being hand quilted. That way, if I get bored with one, I just go to another. Eventually they all get done.

day 1 cut out
day2 sew
day3 sew some more depending on size of quilt

Well, I've been accussed of quilting and sewing at warp speed, and called the energizer bunny too :lol: :lol: , so I guess I sew fast!

When I put my mind to do something, I stick with it until it is done. I don't know how I am so fast because I am soooo picky and and perfectionist.

It takes me a pretty long time mainly because I cut out and sew all the patterns together using construction paper first to be sure I have the measurements correct. That takes quite a bit of time. Once I am sure, it goes a lot faster.

So, how long does it take ya'll to do a quilt, from start to finish? days? weeks? months?

Usually months for me since I hand quilt, But I can , given the right circumstances, make the top of a bedsize quilt in a weekend. Doesnt happen very often but it can happen.

Depending on size, just cutting, sewing a top- say 60'' square, if it isn't a confusing pattern, 2 days. to hand quilt it and bind it, another 2 weeks if on a deadline and no interruptions. That is besides working a full time job. interruptions add another week or 2. The hand quilting is plain, nothing fancy yet. I plan to learn that soon too. Larger add another week. :lol:

I don't really know how long a quilt takes, start to finish - but I average about 2 twin-size quilts a year, with breaks for other projects and of course that pesky work that eats up so much time. I recently did one from a 24-hour quilt book that only took me a month LOL

It seems when I try to plan a quilt and go shopping for material I get side tracked and come home with other material for a future project. It is really frustrating to me. I like to do one thing at a time or maybe two. This site isn't helping me, I get so many ideas and there isn't enough time to do all I'd like to. Right now I'm hand quilting a baby girl quilt, sewing a strip quilt and trying to decide on how to do another baby boy quilt. I'm on a roll but ever now and then I just come to a halt and do nothing for a while.

I am very sloooooow :lol: I agonize over details, and find myself ripping out seams frequently.......reading and re-re-re-reading instructions :lol: Quilting is my hobby and I do enjoy every aspect but the cutting... I still go very slow to make sure that I am accurate :roll: :D
