small apple core template

Sometime ago I purchased the small apple core template from MSQC and I have never tried it. I recently was asked to make a memory quilts and she mentioned that she loves the apple core... so I thought I pull the template out and get busy

What I am struggling with is sizing. How do I know how many of the small apple cores are needed for a certain size quilt? Does anyone know?

I have had the template for some time, so if there was any paperwork I lost it.

Does anyone know how many of the small apple cores go into certain size quilts?

Please let me know

thank you for your responses - I do appreciate the help

I was able to find the ones that you shared, but they are not the same size as the MSQC small apple core template. I can't seem to find the quilt sizes using the small MSQC apple core template. I can't believe its that hard to find !

toogie 10-22-2019 01:03 PM

What size are you hoping to make?

QuiltE 10-22-2019 01:05 PM

What you could do .....
.... use the template and draw out several of them together. Maybe? fill a whole sheet of paper?

Then you would know how many it takes to cover about 8"x10" (for example), and could calculate from there.

Quilt30 10-22-2019 01:15 PM

What size is the small template. Must know size before calculation.

Iceblossom 10-22-2019 01:25 PM

I have Shar Jorgenson's (Quilting from the Heartland) apple core, it's approximately 4.75 inches long, and 2.75 in the cores. She has layouts for large quilts but not really a chart to do for sizing, but for approximating two together in a T shape would be roughly 7" (4.5+2.5, taking off seam allowances). The final row size with alter a little after that on whether you have an inny- or an outie- row.

I'd measure your template, figure out your two-piece section and figure your length and width that way and that it would be close enough. No borders typically for an applecore...

I would contact Missouri star, I bet they would tell you.

Thanks everyone! I do appreciate all of the comments

toogie - I really don't know. I just wanted to know when I should stop cutting blocks :) If I can give them back an uncut shirt I would rather do that than cut a bunch of extra blocks that will be pitched

QuiltE - that is a good idea... I will have to think about that

Quilt 30 - the template is approx 3-3/4" at widest x 4-1/2" at longest

Iceblossom - it seems like everyone's templates are different sizes ... ugh

toverly - I just may do that :)

............

You're welcome .... sorry, forgot to remind you that you need to allow for the seam allowance.
So trace around your template, then a new line in 1/4".
Then use that for the new template to draw it all out.

Or as someone else already said, call Missouri Star and ask!
Surely, they would have the answer?

This MSQC tutorial shows a finished a small apple core quilt . It might give you an idea of scale.

I tried making an apple core quilt once and found the small cures to be impossible for me. After two or three small rows I quit. Ended up in the trash.

Did you check with MSQC? Plus the may have a youtube video that goes with the template.(?)

If you don't get a response about the quilts sizes, here is another option.

Take 4 of the cut pieces and sew them together to determine sample size. It looks like you would have a piece approx 7x7 after they are stitched together.

A row that is 42 inches wide will need 24 cut templates. Then you can add the borders or not.

What size quilt do you want to make?

What are you planning for the borders?

The tutorial shows using charm squares. You could plan according to them but there will some waste to account for in this method. Such a puzzle.

Hope you get the answers you need for your template.

I did call MSQC and the girl that I talked to could not find a specific pattern - - calling out the layout of blocks to get a certain size quilt

At least now I know that I am not missing anything... the information just is not out there :) :)

I do appreciate all or you thoughts and support

Dolphyngyrl 10-23-2019 05:24 PM

Why not email msqc

toogie 10-23-2019 05:56 PM

I emailed MSQC and said my friend wants to know how many apple cores, with your small MSQC apple core ruler would it take to make a crib, twin or full quilt. I heard back. They want to know what pattern I am wanting to make and what size. Can you make more than an Apple Core quilt with this ruler?!! Let me know if you know about what size you are wanting and if there is another pattern, which one you want to make. I will send a reply to them as soon as you let me know.

nativetexan 10-23-2019 06:21 PM

this tutorial is for a small one, says size. https://www.favequilts.com/Throws-an...from-Accuquilt
I have a ton of large apple cores cut waiting for me, also a ton of large wedges. Good luck.

You're a girl after my own heart, I have given certain patterns a try then tossed the struggle. There are happier quilts to make.

wow thank you so much

As far as I know its only the apple core pattern. My plan is to just make apple core blocks and I wanted to figure out how many blocks I would need to cut for a certain size quilt.

I am thinking a throw size quilt... 50 x 60 or so

toogie 10-24-2019 12:27 PM

I will email them today

toogie 10-24-2019 07:21 PM

I heard back from Christa at MSQC. Email from them below:

Thank you for your response! I have included a link below to a tutorial that we have to this pattern. You will need 3 Charm Packs to make a 50x60. I hope this helps!

You are awesome! thanks a million!

This is what I was looking for - - I am not sure if the math adds up tho. I will have to think about this some :)

Rhonda K 10-25-2019 10:51 AM

The finished size is approx 3x4 or 12 sq inches for each cut template. Each four templates will make a block approx 7x7 inches.

Lay a few of the cut templates out on the cutting mat and see how many it takes to make a quarter of the quilt size you want. I'm guessing between 224 and 250 depending on math to make the 50x60 size.

Jordan 10-25-2019 11:12 AM

I have that template but not sure what the size is. I will check and let you know. I haven't used mine either. It looks like you have some good information from others here tho'

Rhonda K 10-25-2019 11:15 AM

Oh Dear! of course the count on math was off for the cut template number in the above post. Sigh.

Continuing on with the math.

It takes 8 quantity of cut templates to make a block that is 14 inches square.

14+14+14+14=56 inches for width. You could always adjust a row.

Going down for length of quilt

Row 1=14 inches

Row 2=14 inches

Row 3=14 inches

Row 4=14 inches

You need to add another row to make the 60 inch length.

Hopefully, the math people will confirm or deny my solution. I have a headache from thinking. LOL!

In other words, hope you get a good final count soon.

meyert 10-25-2019 03:30 PM

thanks everyone!! Math is making my brain feel like scrambled eggs!!! maybe in the morning I will be able to think clearer ha ha
