My BFF had her cut the scraps into 4 different sizes ranging from 6 inches down to 1 1/2 inch blocks. At first I thought 1 1/2 blocks?! OMG! But looks at the results I received today. I need to find a person like that in Nevada! I have a very large garbage bag of scraps that I think are worth keeping. But then I think all my scraps are worth keeping!!!

What a great scrappy quilt!

At my last quilting retreat, one of the girls saved all our scraps to give to a friend who makes beds for her local animal shelter. She uses larger pieces of fabric to sew a pillowcase bed, then fills it with scraps. The beds are completely washable and recycle even the smallest pieces of fabric.

when making humanitarian quilts, i work with squares down to 3" and use the smaller ones more for the baby sizes.
its nice to go thru my pieces, and cut as large a square as i can ...then put them into seperate boxes. i prefer the 1/2" sizes ( 4 1/2, 5 1/2, etc)...makes it easier to count how many blocks you need. (a 9 1/2" makes a 9" finished block, therefore, it takes 9X10 for a 90" wide quilt....then figure how many for the length you want.) 9 1`/2" comes out perfectly for the big quilts. i avoid triangles for Humanitarian, when i know someone will wash it on a rock in a 3rd world country! any scraps are great for the crazy quilts, etc. not much goes to waste.

Since joining here, I've learned to save it all.. Seems people find a use for it no matter how large or small. That makes me feel good. Material is so very expensive now days, so why waste. :) happy quilting (((Hugs)))
