What a great idea, I will have to make one of these. I have the tool but not used it yet.

That is really cute. And what a clever DH!

That looks really neat!

I am so amazed how such a plain boring before can become such an awesome after with this technique! Very creative and lovely after!!
That's really cool.

You have inspired me to use the Twister template that I bought a couple of months ago. Cute Christmas tree!
Love it!
:-D |
Oh gosh... This is so cute!
How did your husband cut the plastic? Maybe I will try it too...have a few of those picture boxes.
So cool. I've been wanting to make a tree and I like yours. I made a small template so this would work great. Thanks.

Thanks for all the nice comments. I will let the subject go after answering a few more questions. First, I want to make sure everyone knows this isn't an original idea. I saw a picture of a similar tree quilt, but no pattern was available. I used graph paper to make my own version. It is smaller (mostly in the height, has a different trunk and different garlands. I would also suggest that instead of garlands, you could put in an occasional block of another bright color in the green layout to look like scattered stars or ornaments. Rethinking my pattern, I do not believe the white rows on both sides are necessary, as long as you of course use the borders called for in all twister tool patterns. As for how my husband cut the template, he used rather thin acrylic, measured carefully and cut with a utility knife. He used the same knife, but didn't cut as deep to make the center lines. He then put in black permanent ink to fill in the groove. After it dried, he washed the surface with rubbing alcohol. For anyone wanting basic info on the twister tool, please used the search function offered by the board to find many nice tutorials and layouts. The web also has a number of nice tutorials available if you just use the Google or Yahool, or whatever search method. There are even some utube versions I think. PS I'm still looking for border fabric.

I was wondering how to make the tree. Thanks for posting the before and after.
Love it.
I bought the 5" ruler to make The Twister Christmas Wreath and am getting anxious to finish my latest project so I can try the Twister. |
Bonnie, It really is a lot of fun. I have made a number of table runners and a couple of the wall hangings. (I learned about the tool on the board and have several members of my quilting bee, as well as two neighbors and other friends making twister quilts) Several borrowed the twister tool I bought and then decided they had to buy their own!

Hi!! I just love your tree!!! I'm a Christmas person and just love this stuff. I've made several twister projects and just can't stop! I am definitely going to give your pattern a whirl. How big is the finished project??
Good job and thanks for filling me in. the picklelady |
Love the twister tree - would like to make one small enough to aplique onto a 12" block for our church christmas quilt. that may be a bit difficult as it will be quite small
Janjj, I can't imagine how small that would be! "Picklelady," my quilt--still without borders--is now about 24" wide by 25 inches tall. Bothered by the width, I took off a row of white on each side (not top & bottom.) It's the same layout I showed at top of this topic, minus the two rows. I found border fabric I think I like. I plan a narrow stopper and then final border, probably 3.5 to 4"...I really do love the tree. My twister tools are getting a workout. I've made 5-6 table runners or toppers, two wreaths and the tree. That doesn't include ones I've helped my bee with! (Now I'm working on a pumpkin design and in using them in a patriotic banner featuring an eagle applique. )

thats cool.
Good job!!
Love it...what was the finished size? I want to make a twisted christmas table runner and perhaps this version will work...others too big...need to downsize wreath also for the runmer.
that is so cute. i love the twister ruler. i got the itty bitty one where u start with 2.5" squares. it is insane to sew and cut.
there are three rulers to use when making the twister pattern. The 8 1/2in ruler you cut 10" squares, The 3 1/2 in ruler you cut 5 in. squares. The 1 1/2 in. ruler you cut 3 in squares which tends to be minature in size when done. How do I know? because I purchased all three rulers. I have made several tablerunners and placemats using the 3 1/2 in ruler and the smallest one you can make mug rugs with. Haven't made anything with the big one yet.

I love my twister!
Cute. Love the design
Thanks! I also have rulers
