Has anyone made a "smart bag"?

I bought one at a quilting shop and got verbal instructions from the shopkeeper but now can't quite remember what to do

It basically is iron on stuff like wonder under that is ironed to two pieces of material (one for the lining and one for the outer) then folded and sewn and turned inside out to make a bag.

The part I am having trouble with is whether to sew before you fold or how much is sewn then fold?

My trouble is I don't know how to sew other than what I have learned for quilting :(

So if anyone has made one of these I would really appreciate some advice. I have the fabric ironed on but don't know what to do next?

I don't quite know what it is. Do you add handles for a tote bag? I would think you fused your pieces. then fold right sides together and sew. Then turn right side out. anyone else? Is it a packaged item or a craft item?

Marybeth 07-08-2007 12:36 PM

Yes, handles are added for a tote bag.

I will try your suggestion and let you know :)

Here is a tutorial on making one particular style bag. Perhaps something here will be of help. Visual aids ae usually helpful.

I too am trying to find instructions for the making of the Smart Bag by QuiltSmart. Help!!! I think it should be labeled Dumb Bag for me.

Knot Sew 07-21-2007 10:57 AM

It is in the second message of this thread :-)

Hi june6995 and Mary Beth,

I too have one of the "dumb" smart bags part-way completed. The lady in the quilt shop gave me the "simple" directions as well. That was a year ago. I pulled it out again a few minutes and still nothing is making sense. Can't tell where to sew or fold or whatever. Did you ever figure this thing out? I haven't felt this stupid in a longgggg time. :!:

I, too, fell for this dumb bag thingamajig... Which was silly since I have great tote bag patterns, but I thougt I would try something new.

Did anyone find the instructions? I tried all the above links but couldn't find any.

june6995 09-09-2008 02:06 PM

I am going to post this list of instructions for various bags. I do not know exactly what a Smart bag is but perhaps some of these ideas will help some of you. I see we were discussing this last year. I do not even know if all these are still available, but for those of you still looking for instructions, perhaps some of these will help. It is difficult to know what one is talking about with out more clues or photos. this is the best I can offer for right now.

Thanks so much. Yes, the Quiltsmart smart bags are still available. I bought mine this past weekend, then about 20 minutes ago, I emailed the company. They are sending me instructions. I will be happy to share.

I LOVE lazy girl designs. I have their basic tote patern and it is very nice. Thanks again!

Does your interfacing have broken lines and solid lines and a picture of scissors on it?

blueribbontoes 10-25-2008 01:01 PM

Yup, I recived the instructions and with them, the bag takes about 5 minutes to make. Very nice. Apparently, according to the rep, the fabric store SHOULD provide the instructions with the interfacing. (Thanks once again Richland Center fabric store for crappy customer service!)

I would be happy to share the instructions, but not sure how to get them online. If anyone wants them, private message me. I am sure I could mail you a photocopy.

Mary Beth,

It has taken a long time for you to find the instructions for making this bag. I see this morning that someone has posted a tutorial and I hope you are on your way to finishing the bag...finally. That was July a year ago.

I admire your patience . You have persisted and now you can complete the bag and maybe go on and make another one. I know some people would have given up a long time ago, but quilters are a different "breed" and they don't quit until they get it right or finished...whichever come first.

The next question is: was this the bag for which you were hoping to make? Are the instructions exactly what you needed!

Please let us know how it turns out.

:( I bought the Smart Bag Pattern too. I have just made the same bag 3 times, I have never felt so stupid in my life.
I think the instructions are not good at all, it should just be a smiple sewing project. Used up my printed iron on stuff and don't want to buy the entire thing again, I would like to make 6 of these but really stuck on this pattern.

Clara 11-14-2008 01:08 PM

I will try to send you the picture right now, thank you.

I have the picture but cannot seem to copy and send from my printer.
Evidently I need computer lessons too.
Thank you so much for trying to help.
I have just printed out Tarilyn's Show and Tell for her tote bag, that should help.

I also bought just the pattern at a quilt show. I didn't have too much trouble until I got the the bottom. It is supposed to fold into a flat bottom and I cannot make that happen.

Knot Sew 10-31-2009 10:39 AM

check the date  someone dug this out of the very old posts and they are still selling it   be careful what u buy at quilt shoiws
