Smelly fabric
I have some older fabrics that have that destictive smell. Tried to wash it with just washing powder and no fabric softener, but it is still smelly. What can I use to get that smell out?
Thanks! |
Maybe some baking soda with the detergent? I've done that with sweaty gym clothes.
|
baking soda would be my suggestion too.
|
I used washing soda with borax. It didn't work. Maybe plain baking soda would be better.
|
vinegar also works well to *freshen* fabrics...if soda doesn't work try that- (but don't put them together or you will build a volcano!)as in vinegar & soda ;)
|
the dryer and dryer sheets didn't work? how about oxyclean? takes out everything else. maybe smell also.
|
I made a washing powder with borax, oxyclean, washing soda, and glycern soap crumbled. It still smells. Washing again with just baking soda. If that doesn't work, I will try vinegar.
Thanks!! |
Put in the freezer overnight.

Tracey,
Let mr know how it works. Susan |
I googled "how to remove smells from fabric". Came up with fill washer full with warm water. Add 2 cups of white vinegar. Let soak for 30 minutes. Then wash as usual. Dry on low until fully dry. Line dry is recomended on sunny days. Will try that if the baking soda doesn't work.
Thanks so much for the help. You gals rock! |

This worked for me. I also had to wash it multiple times. One batch was moth ball smell. It came out.

How about washing it with one of those odor remover products they make to get animal accidents out of your living room carpet. Worked for me.
|
Soaking in warm water with 1/2 cup white vinegar worked!! Fabric is now in the dryer on low heat smelling fresh. Now just to do 4 more large rubbermaid containers.

Hang it out in the rain, takes out smells and stains

I don't know what your fabric smells like but have you ever heard of 'cotton rot'? I was in walmart years ago and a lady complained of the rotten smell in the fabric department . a man was in th fab dep and said it smelled just like the cotton that went bad during rainy weather and all of it was burned to get rid of the smell ... someone else joined in to say a whole shipload of jeans had to be pulled at another walmart because of 'cotton rot'.
|
Wow! That is horrible. The fabic was stored for many years at my great grandmother's house. It had a very old, musty smell. Didn't think about cotton rot. Thanks!

I had the same issue with a quilt room full of fabric given to me. I washed about 40 loads total... I washed it with Tide and then used fabric softer in washer, and then dryer sheets in dryer... Smell came out!!!!
