I am wanting to make snowball blocks from a couple of charm packs.

What size should I cut the squares that will be sewn to each corner of the charm and then trimmed away to make the snowball?

Do you think 2 inches is about right? Is there a formula to figure this?

Thanks for your help. :-)

There are many references on the web. The "usual" formula is to take the size of your finished block, and divide by 3. Then add 1/2 inch to that measurement, and you will have the size of the small corner squares.

So, for a 6" (finished size) block, you will cut the small corner squares 2.5 inches.

Does that make sense? Hope so!!!

There are 3 snowball patterns (free) at http://quilterscache.com/S/SnowballBlock.html :D

This is how I decide, too. finished will be 1/3 of side

This is the pattern I used when I made mine. Worked out really well.

So since a charm is 5 inches---
5 divided by 3 is 1.66

and then you add 1/2 an inch

So 1.66 + .5 = 2.16

So I'll just cut the corners a little over 2 inches. :-)

2" sounds close enough! make a couple of samples - one using 2" and 2 1/4" and see how it looks.

We'll wait!

Not to make this more confusing, but if your charm squares are 5" unfinished, then, once sewn together, they would end up 4.5 finished. If that is so, then you would divide 4.5 by 3 and add 1/2 inch to that.

I've never worked with charm packs, so I'm not sure of the exact size of the squares.

Anyone else have a comment?
