Snythrapol & Retayne
 

Can anyone tell me the difference between Snythrapol and Retayne? Both seem to be made to use in the first wash. After I had some green fabric that would not stop bleeding I used Retayne and it was fine.
Should I also use Snythrapol? Thanks for any help.
I am a prewasher and have always been glad that I do. I don't mind the extra work of ironing the smaller pieces. I have a lot of batiks that are Jelly Rolls and Charm Packs. I have prewashed some Jelly Rolls and Charm Packs and there was a big difference in fabric from the same roll and pack. I have since heard that you should not prewash them. That didn't make sense to me because if fabric is going to bleed or srink I don't think that size will make a difference. If you prewash the yardage why not the precuts?

Precuts tend to ravel more than yardage especially if you agitate in the machine.Lots of those that prewash, serge the yardage...not so with precuts...can you imagine all the surging of those 2 1/2 in strips or squares?

I use Retayne if I prewash as it is less expensive than the other and I've used it also in a completed quilt.

synthropol keeps fugitive dyes from getting on other fabrics- it suspends the dye in the water (so you do not get bleeding/runs on other fabrics in the wash) retayne sets the dye. 2 very different products.

How I always keep them straight in my mind is that I remember that they are alphabetical. R comes before S.

Retayne is used BEFORE making the quilt, Synthropol is used AFTER the quilt is made.

Keeps it straight for me at least.

As the link says, Retayne is for commercially dyed fabrics and Synthropol is for hand dyed fabrics
