Recently I got some med. gold/tan for a cat panel I am doing. I was so very lucky to get it 40% off. Sis and I went out and stopped at the same store last week. I thought I would get the purple hand quilting thread for Sis's quilt. Well, it was on sale again...30% off. I got three spools of different colors for future projects. Now that I have these, I am so tempted to go out and get other colors that I don't even need. Someone hold me back....

quazyquilter 03-14-2010 07:14 AM

Yup, it's a sickness, all right...Isn't it grand????

littlehud 03-14-2010 07:38 AM

Sorry, I can't hold you back. I can't even stop myself. I can tell your hooked.

Karen 03-14-2010 07:43 AM

I'm so glad to know I'm not alone in this addiction!!!

grandma1 03-14-2010 07:49 AM

I have supervised visits to the fabric store, I can't trust myself to do it alone, all those pretty red tags yelling 40% off.... come and get it girls!!!!!

BellaBoo 03-14-2010 08:44 AM

You have already shown more restraint then I could have. Me leaving with 3 spools when it's a great sale price? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

kapatt 03-14-2010 08:56 AM

"Someone hold me back...."

 Why hold you back. If I have the money, I would definitely be doing the same thing. I know I will use it up in the next year or two.

That put a smile on my face. I can picture me having mine supervised. Hey, wait a minute. Maybe I could have my quilting sister supervise me. What a great "out" that is.

I tried having my DD go with me. They don't sew. It backfired. They picked out fabric for their "next" quilts. They bought their own fabric and encouraged me to get more too. DGD pointed out the floral fabrics because she knows I love it. I spent more than if I went along. Sigh.

tkhooper 03-14-2010 04:07 PM

Well I don't know about holding you back but I can definitely get in front of you and snatch it all up lol. Will that work?

ginnie6 03-14-2010 05:02 PM

you know until I started quilting thread was well just thread. Now though......I can oooh and ahh over thread till my dh thinks I've lost it! I would love to just bring the whole Gutermann display home! And speaking of thread I really need some wine or jewel tones .......

brushandthimble 03-15-2010 12:36 PM

I like to have whatever on hand for whenever I may want it. I have been making do the past year, so if you have the $ get it for when you don't:) that is how I rationalized my spending when I was able to spend. WORKED GREAT, I am been creative the past year using my stash of fabric, threads, books and magazines. So go ahead it will be used sometime......

tkhooper 03-16-2010 04:13 PM

Well then, by gosh they will have to re-arrange the isles....

I used to try to eat right and then one day I said "What For?". I could be the healthiest person on the planet and get hit by a bus. So I enjoy my macaroni and cheese, ice cream, steak and what-have-you, with a smile on my face.

tkhooper 03-16-2010 04:51 PM

seasaw2mch 03-16-2010 07:49 PM

ok I see no problem with building a stash of thread. Think about this. Back in 1998 I started sewing for lots of kids in the 4H clubs and of course they all needed differant colors so thread had to be bought. When 1 spool was needed I would buy 2, this continued throught the years. So the thread you buy now is 4 times the amount I paid for it back then.
Another point is, my son's girls freind is now wanting to sew but can't afford a lot of the supplies, so I just point her to my stashes and let her pick what she needs.
She's happy, I happy to have been able to share it with her.
Morale of this story, you can never have to much of any sewing supplies.

redrummy 03-16-2010 08:37 PM

Hold you back,,,,, I thought I would ride along with you!!!!

HIBISCUS 03-17-2010 06:30 AM

About hoarding thread: I inherited a gob lot of sewing notions and threads from a friend who died a couple of years ago. He was a drapery designer & maker, had all sorts of stuff, most of it great.
However, I have run into a problem with the thread: lots of it is so old it's rotten, goes on the bobbin ok but top and bottom threads break with frequency when you try and sew!!!

Some of the thread was on wooden spools (anybody out there old enough to remember 35cent thread besides me???). Now I have saved some of my mother's spools because it reminds me of her, but wouldn't dare use it in a garment or a quilted piece.

Well sure!! Together we can buy out the whole place. Then they will have to order more. ;)

dsj 03-17-2010 02:27 PM

As you can see already that this is not the place to go to if you need help in not buying fabric, magazines, or books. We are all weak in this area.

This is a disease for which I hope there is no cure.

So far no one on this thread has discovered a cure thank goodness and from what it looks like this is a very contagious, fast spreading, fever that attacks all sizes, shapes, ages, non-gender specific kind of epidemic. The symptoms are at least fun to have, no pain really, sort of in the pocket book, but that goes away quickly. Of all fevers to have this is the one I like the most.

Deecee 03-17-2010 11:06 PM

And I am just sitting back over here smiling at the image of ALL OF YOU trying to charge down the aisle at the same time. I just hope there is enough thread to go around!

sewgull 03-18-2010 06:13 AM

Sale on thread? Local shop here would never let that happen.
I usually buy thread when I travel, and find a good sale. It's a shame the local shop don't care to help their customer save anything. The price to take a class is outragous. I see newletters from other areas and the cost of class are less than here. Thanks letting me air, I would like to take classes but limited money makes it hard.

Maybe you could mention to some of your friends that you want classes and see if they know a place. OR, maybe you could start a group and meet once a week. Sometimes people get great tips from friends that is almost like having a class.

sewgull 03-18-2010 10:13 AM

4 of us meet each Monday and sew, we have been together for over 10 years. A few have moved on or pasted away
added one. Hoping to increase. So many people still work full time it is hard to keep a group with the same people each week.
